In a recent interview with This is Futbol, former England under-21 international Marcus Bent urged Everton to sign Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham during this summer transfer window. Bent said,
“Would he come in and be a 20-goal-a-season player? I’m not sure.
“But what I do know is he would be someone Everton would love. He has pace, is a goalscorer, good in the air and a good finisher.”
Abraham’s Recent Struggles At The English Capital
Abraham had a far from an ideal campaign for the Blues recently as he failed to impress after Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as the club’s new manager in January. Still, the English marksman deserves credit for scoring 12 goals and providing six assists in 32 matches for the West London giants last season in multiple competitions.
The 23-year-old struggled to give a good account of himself because most of his game time came off the bench. Hence, it is no surprise that Abraham averaged just 1.5 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game in Premier League football. He was also a bit sloppy when distributing possession in the final third, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 72.7% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Abraham is still under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2023, but he needs to find an escape route out of West London if he wants to re-establish himself as a top performer in the Premier League.
What Will The English Striker Add To Rafael Benitez’s Side?
Abraham is a powerful runner with the ball and can make some quick dashes in behind the opponent’s backline. He can use his strong 1.90m frame to dominate the opposition centre-backs in the air and usually scores his fair share of goals via headers.
When the English frontman is playing with confidence, he can be a decent goal-scorer up top as he can lose his marker by overpowering them and can strike the ball with power in the final third. However, Abraham has to figure out a way to be more consistent as he has been far from convincing with his performances this year.
The London-born talent will add plenty of firepower to the Toffees attack and could offer some serious competition for Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park in the coming seasons. Hence, Rafael Benitez would be wise to engineer a move to bring him to the blue half of Merseyside before the start of the new campaign. At 23, Abraham will only get better with each season as long as the Toffees are willing to play him regularly over the next few years.
