According to Tag 24, Arsenal are in the market for Denis Zakaria. The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder is highly expected to leave the club after the Foals failed to qualify for European football. It has put Arsenal on red alert, although the Gunners are set to face stiff competition from Manchester City and SSC Napoli in the pursuit of the Swiss international.
What Is Denis Zakaria All About?
A native of Genf, Denis Zakaria has become a key asset for Borussia Monchengladbach since joining the club in 2017. He has mustered 128 competitive appearances for the club, emerging as a vital cog in the second line of press.
Especially under the leadership of Marco Rose, Zakaria had become a masterful ball-winner in the middle of the park. In addition, the Swiss international impressed the onlookers with his technical prowess and passing, forming a solid partnership with the likes of Christoph Kramer and Jonas Hofmann.
Not to mention, the Swiss international is quite a versatile operator. Despite being a central midfielder by trade, the 24-year-old can play as a defensive midfielder and as a centre-back if required. He has also featured as a right-sided midfielder, with a tendency to drift out wide if necessary.
Unfortunately, Zakaria’s progress under Rose was halted by an unfortunate knee injury that kept him out for more than eight months. It has had a major impact on his performances, although the midfielder is all set to start from scratch in the upcoming season.
Is He A Good Option For Arsenal?
Arsenal are in the market for midfield reinforcements this summer. They have recently sanctioned another loan for Matteo Guendouzi, while Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard have both returned to Real Madrid.
On top of that, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira both face an uncertain future at the club. It has left Mikel Arteta devoid of options in the middle of the park, thus making Denis Zakaria an excellent option.
The Swiss international might be an ideal replacement for his compatriot Xhaka due to his ability to win back possession for his team. He is also quite athletic and can offer technical prowess, even though he does tend to be complacent in possession at times.
During his time at Gladbach, Zakaria has also polished his positioning, making him an ideal fit for Arteta’s juego de posicion style of play inspired by Pep Guardiola. However, it is fair to point out that the Gladbach midfielder might cost a fortune despite the unfortunate 2020/21 campaign while interest from Napoli and Man City doesn’t bode well for the Gunners either.
