Denmark faced off against England at Wembley Stadium earlier tonight as they looked to pull off an upset win and secure a place in the final of the UEFA European Championships. The Danish players made an impressive start to the contest and scored the opening goal at the half-hour mark when Mikkel Damsgaard found the back of the net with a thunderous strike. However, Simon Kjaer scored an unfortunate own goal from point-blank range just nine minutes later which meant that both sides went into the half-time break all level on the scoreline.
The two teams fought tooth and nail in the second 45 minutes but struggled to net the winning goal as the contest finished 1-1 at the end of normal time. Gareth Southgate’s men dominated the game in extra time and were awarded a penalty in the 104th minute which Harry Kane initially failed to convert before scored from the rebound. Denmark struggled to come up with a response as the match ended 2-1 in favour of the Three Lions after extra time.
Let’s take a look at how each Denmark player fared during the match against England.
GK: Kasper Schmeichel – 8/10
The Leicester City made a plethora of world-class saves to keep his team in the contest. He also stopped Kane’s penalty in extra time but couldn’t do much about the rebound.
CB: Andreas Christensen – 6.5/10
He was strong in the air and passed the ball relatively well from the back. Christensen cleared his lines when needed but picked up an injury and had to be replaced in the second half.
CB: Simon Kjaer – 6/10
Kjaer was unfortunate to score a poor own goal in the first half. However, he was otherwise a rock at the back and kept Harry Kane quiet for major periods of the game.
CB: Jannik Vestergaard – 7/10
He was a towering presence at the centre of the Denmark backline and dealt with mostly everything that came his way.
RM: Jacob Bruun Larsen – 6/10
He was solid at the back but struggled to give a good account of himself in the England half. He got subbed out of the game in the 66th minute.
CM: Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 7.5/10
Hojbjerg got stuck with a lot of crunching tackles to disrupt England’s rhythm in the game. He was also lively going forward.
CM: Thomas Delaney – 6.5/10
Delaney worked hard to help his teammates out defensively but struggled to influence the game in the final third.
LM: Joakim Mæhle – 6.5/10
He was defensively solid but lacked the cutting edge going forward.
RW: Martin Braithwaite – 6/10
Braithwaite had a couple of lively moments in the game but often found himself isolated in the Three Lions half.
ST: Kasper Dolberg – 6.5/10
Dolberg caused a few problems for the English centre-halves but only lasted for 66 minutes.
LW: Mikkel Damsgaard – 8/10
Damsgaard scored a wonder goal with an excellent strike at the half-hour mark. But it was not enough in the end.
Substitutes:
RM: Daniel Wass – 6/10
He brought some energy onto the field.
CM: Christian Nørgaard – 6/10
Norgaard made two important clearances during his time on the field.
ST: Yussuf Poulsen – 6/10
He won a couple of headers but was a frustrated figure up top.
CB: Joachim Andersen – 6.5/10
Andersen kept things tidy at the back.
CM: Mathias Jensen – 6/10
He struggled to get into the game in extra time.
ST: Jonas Wind – 6/10
Wind was Denmark’s last throw of the dice.
