According to Sport, FC Barcelona are prepared to offload Miralem Pjanic, with Tottenham Hotspur emerging as a potential destination. Newly president Joan Laporta is keen on getting rid of some of the fringe players in an attempt to balance the books. One of the players likely to leave, at least on loan, is Pjanic, who could either move to Serie A or Tottenham.
Miralem Pjanic’s Struggles At FC Barcelona
Miralem Pjanic joined Barcelona last summer in a direct swap deal with Arthur Melo. He was brought in to provide more quality in the midfield department that was struggling to compete with other European giants.
Unfortunately, Pjanic has endured a disastrous 2020/21 campaign, mustering only 619 minutes of league football. He wasn’t able to impress Ronald Koeman, instead falling behind the likes of Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Pedri in the pecking order.
The Bosnian international, though, is still highly rated because of his technical prowess. He can expertly play the role of an anchor and is quite proficient from set-pieces. He was, in fact, one of Juventus’ creator-in-chiefs during his time in Turin.
Pjanic may not have the pace or aggression anymore, but he offers composure to the table. He can distribute the ball all around the park while having an eye for the defence-threading through balls – making him a creative powerhouse in the middle of the park.
Is Pjanic A Good Option For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur are certainly in need of a midfield revamp following a disappointing couple of seasons. The addition of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned out to be a bargain last summer.
However, the team lacks a reliable, creative presence in midfield. Tanguy Ndombele faded after a strong start to the season, whereas players like Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko simply do not provide enough quality to the north London side.
This makes Miralem Pjanic an ideal target for Tottenham, as new coach Nuno Espirito Santo looks to turn the tables. The Barcelona midfielder can offer excellent support to Hojbjerg, offering the technical abilities and ball rotation quality that could ultimately add the much-needed balance in the middle of the park.
The Bosnian international’s vast experience at the highest level of football should be useful as well. And although the player might command a relatively high wage packet, Tottenham might just be able to afford him should they manage to offload some of their fringe players this summer.
