Recent reports from The Sun state that Manchester United are keen on signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the ongoing transfer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to add to his options in the attacking department.
The report further states that the Red Devils will face some stiff competition for the signature of the Englishman as Arsenal and Real Madrid are also believed to be in the race for him. However, with his contract running until 2025, the Toffees are in no rush to sell the player.
Calvert-Lewin’s Amazing Season At Goodison Park
With 21 goals in thirty-nine appearances across all competitions last term, Dominic Calvert-Lewin enjoyed the most productive season of his career.
The Sheffield-born striker managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board last season– averaging 2.5 shots, 0.5 key passes, and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League (calculated over 33 appearances).
Former Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti was left impressed by the qualities of Calvert-Lewin.
“Dominic has all the attributes to become one of the best strikers in England and in Europe.”
“He is fast, has good skills, is strong in the air and works extremely hard for the team. He also has a fantastic mentality, and his desire to improve has impressed me ever since I came to the club.”
With the wide array of technical abilities the 24-year-old possesses, he’d be a great addition to any top European side at this moment.
The Right Choice For Solskjaer?
Although veteran striker Edinson Cavani recently penned down a one-year contract extension at Manchester United, given his age, he might not be the ideal man to lead his side through the tightest of fixture pile-ups.
On the other hand, Anthony Martial struggled to find his form in the front of the goal across the entirety of the 2020/21 season.
At 24, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has already shown the world what he’s capable of. He has got great strength and can also score his fair share of goals via headers. He’d be the perfect replacement for Edinson Cavani in the long term, so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should definitely try and get the deal over the line in the coming weeks.
United legend Rio Ferdinand, speaking on his YouTube channel, said that the club should target the Three Lions striker.
“Listen Dominic Calvert-Lewin for me I love him.”
“I’ve watched a lot of Everton this year and he’s one that unnerves defenders. He’s not one you want to play against week in, week out. He’s aggressive, he attacks the ball.”
“I think he’d be a fantastic signing for Manchester United. It’s one out of left field a little bit but I think he’d have a big impact.”
“He’d get on the end of the things created by Fernandes, [Paul] Pogba, Rashford, Greenwood.”
