England locked horns with Germany at Wembley Stadium earlier tonight, hoping to pick up a win in the Round of 16 of the Euro 2020 tournament. Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock around the 75-th minute as he hit the ball past Manuel Neuer from Luke Shaw’s cross to make it 1-0 for the hosts. Just 10 minutes later, Harry Kane got his name on the scoresheet to cement a 2-0 win for The Three Lions.
Let’s take a look at how each England player fared during the clash against Germany.
England Players Rated In Win Vs Germany
Jordan Pickford 8
The Everton shot-stopper was immense between the sticks tonight. He made a couple of good saves to keep his side in the game, especially the Kai Havertz volley from just outside the penalty area. His ball distribution was brilliant, as usual.
Kieran Trippier 7
The Atletico Madrid man failed to impress in the opposition half as almost half of his crosses failed to reach the intended target; however, he fared well defensively. He also seemed to struggle with the passes at times.
Kyle Walker 7
The Manchester City right-back was perhaps deployed in the right centre-back position tonight, but he looked fairly comfortable over the course of the game. He coordinated well with Harry Maguire and John Stones and helped his side secure a deserved clean sheet. He won some crucial aerial duels as well.
John Stones 7.5
John Stones was a rock at the back tonight. Not only did he make important clearances and tackles from time to time, but he also played some precise long balls to help develop his side’s attack.
Harry Maguire 8
The Manchester United centre-back kept things in order at the back, and he even made a crucial block to deny the German attackers from finding the back of the net. He got a couple of free headers in the opposition box as well.
Luke Shaw 9
Shaw had an influence on the attacking side of the game as he linked up well with Sterling to progress upfield. He even delivered some decent crosses into the box and played a huge role in both of England’s goals.
Kalvin Phillips 7.5
The Leeds United midfielder showed an attacking intent right from the first half as he played some decent through balls to unlock the German defence.
Declan Rice 7
Yet again, the West Ham United man displayed a tremendous work rate at the centre of the park as he won the ball back for his side on a number of occasions over the course of the game. He kept running up and down the field to intercept the passes and break down the opposition’s play, and he wasn’t hesitant about playing forward passes either.
Bukayo Saka 6.5
The Arsenal star created menace for the German defence down the right flank but deprived of support, he was rather left isolated at times. As a result, he lost possession of the ball way too frequently.
Raheem Sterling 9
The Manchester City winger was undoubtedly England’s brightest player on the pitch tonight. He single-handedly kept numerous attacks going despite the lack of support and ultimately netted the first goal of the game around the 75-minute-mark.
Harry Kane 7.5
The Tottenham Hotspur striker failed to impress as much as any of his teammates tonight, but he finally got his name on the scoresheet in the 88th minute.
SUBSTITUTES (England Players Rated In Win Vs Germany)
Jack Grealish 9.5
The Aston Villa man turned the game on its head just minutes after coming on as he created both the goal-scoring chances. But, as much as I love appreciating Raheem Sterling, Grealish has been the man of the match for me.
Jordan Henderson N/A
It was too late when he came on.
