In a recent segment with El Chiringuito TV, renowned Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada revealed that Manchester United ‘have total agreement’ to land Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane this summer. It is understood that the Red Devils’ agreement with Los Blancos is ‘total’ with regards to a summer move for the France international (via El Chiringuito TV).
Varane’s Solid Season In The Spanish Top-Flight
Varane had another dominant season at the Spanish capital as he was responsible for performing at a high level at the heart of Real Madrid’s backline. The 28-year-old managed to score twice in 41 matches for the Spanish giants in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The Lille-born talent gave a good account of himself on the defensive end of the field after he averaged 0.7 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per 90 minutes in the 2020-21 La Liga season. He has even distributed possession accurately from the back based on his pass success rate of 89.6% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Varane has just got over a year left to run in his Los Blancos contract, so the alarm bells are ringing with regards to his long-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Hence, Man United have every reason to be optimistic about their chances of recruiting the Frenchman before the start of the new campaign.
Will Varane Be A Good Fit For The Red Devils This Summer?
Varane is currently among Europe’s best central defenders as he can time his challenges well to make some crucial interceptions at the back for his team. He excels at clearing the danger quickly and is not shy of putting his body on the line to block a goal-bound shot from the opposition.
The 78-time France international is also a composed presence on the ball and is proficient at playing his way out from the defence. However, there are some concerns over whether he can perform at his best in England as he might struggle to cope with the high intensity of Premier League football.
Recruiting Varane this summer could be a good move for the Red Devils as he will inject a lot of quality to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backline. Plus, we can expect him to be a regular starter at Old Trafford as he is more than capable of forming a dominant defensive partnership with Harry Maguire at the heart of the Man United defence in the coming seasons.
Varane will improve Solskjaer’s defensive options significantly and has got the winning mindset to help the Red Devils win some major trophies over the next few years. Hence, the Real Madrid star will be an excellent fit for the Mancunian giants ahead of the new campaign.
