According to the Daily Record, Rangers are set to hand Geroge Edmundson a second chance to prove his worth despite interest from Peterborough United. The newly-promoted Championship side are ready to table a six-figure bid for the defender, but the Bears boss Steven Gerrard is unlikely to sanction the transfer unless there is a drastic change of plan later this summer.
The streets will never forget his Europa League heroics last year against Braga. The 23-year-old was supposed to play a key role this season alongside Connor Goldson, but a dramatic turn of events saw him slipping down the pecking order behind Leon Balogun and Filip Helander. The suspension served for breaching covid regulations added more misery to his first-team aspirations at Ibrox.
The former Oldham Athletic prodigy was loaned out to Derby County following the arrival of Jack Simpson from Bournemouth. Edmundson made 10 appearances for the Rams and played his part in their survival. There’s interest from Derbyshire over a potential return to Pride Park, however, the ongoing uncertainty amid the takeover talks has left them in financial transience.
The Posh, meanwhile, were close to rope him in from Oldham back in 2019 before the Light Blues hijacked the transfer. Darren Ferguson seems not to have given up on the youngster, but the Peterborough chief should accept the situation and switch his sights on other targets with Rangers in no rush to offload Edmundson.
Why Rangers Must Not Let Edmundson Leave
The Gers have conquered the Scottish crown after a decade of despair and are now gearing up for next month’s Champions League qualifiers. They might not be blessed to spend millions in the transfer window, yet the effective spending helped them bolster the setup significantly since Gerrard’s appointment as the Ibrox chief.
Having said that, the possible high-profile egress of Alfredo Morelos would see the club balancing the books to some extent and the gaffer, therefore, must keep hold of all his options to compete week in week out across competitions. The exit of the Colombian would leave a void high up the pitch and a good chunk of his transfer fee should be reinvested sensibly to restore parity in the attacking third.
Rangers are well equipped in the heart of the backline with ample depth. But a few injuries might expose them severely (considering the past records of Nikola Katic, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun) and the decision to retain the services of such a promising young prospect makes absolute sense for the time being.
