Italy locked horns with Wales earlier this evening, hoping to pick up a win in the final group stage game of their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign. Matteo Pessina’s 39-minute goal from a set-piece situation turned out to be the winner for the hosts as they successfully secured a 1-0 victory to top their group with all 9 points.
Let’s take a look at how each Italian player fared during the clash against Wales.
Italy Players Rated In Win Vs Wales
Gianluigi Donnarumma 7
Donnarumma had a very comfortable time in between the sticks tonight. He was never really put to any sort of test.
Rafael Toloi 6.5
The Atalanta right-back blasted forward occasionally but failed to create much in attacking terms. However, he fared well defensively.
Leonardo Bonucci 7
The Juventus centre-back made some important tackles and clearances to help his side secure a clean sheet in the first half, following which he was replaced by Francesco Acerbi.
Alessandro Bastoni 7
The Inter Milan defender paired well with Bonucci at the heart of Italy’s defence and put up a commanding display tonight. His positioning was really impressive.
Emerson 6.5
The Chelsea wing-back was rather focused on the offensive side of his game as he made overlapping runs time and again to create menace for the Welsh defenders down the left wing.
Matteo Pessina 8.5
Pessina converted from Marco Veratti’s free-kick around the 39-minute-mark to put his side in the lead. Just a couple of minutes later, he had the chance to double his tally but failed to capitalise on the opportunity. Nonetheless, it was an impressive display from the 24-year-old midfielder.
Jorginho 7
The Chelsea star made numerous recoveries in midfield as he exhibited a tremendous work rate over the course of the game. He did a good job in shielding his side’s back-four and stopping the opposition counter-attacks.
Marco Verratti 8.5
The Paris Saint-Germain star created some good chances for the frontmen as he dictated the play for the majority of the game. He bagged an assist upon his return to the starting line-up as well.
Federico Bernardeschi 6
The Juventus man hit the crossbar from a set-piece situation and played some good passes to unlock the Wales defence time and again.
Federico Chiesa 6.5
The 23-year-old was a constant source of menace for the Wales backline tonight, and he could have easily gotten his name on the scoresheet. In the first forty minutes or so, he was unstoppable as he managed to penetrate Robert Page’s defence with some well-timed runs.
Andrea Belotti 6
The Torino striker got about a dozen of chances to find the back of the net but failed to convert any of them. He got himself in the most dangerous positions in the box but seemed to lack the clinical finishing touch.

Acerbi replaced Bonucci at half-time and helped his side keep things tidy at the back for the remaining forty-five minutes.

He added some extra energy to Italy’s midfield.

He played some tidy passes after coming on.
