According to Alan Nixon, Mansfield Town are interested in Nathan Bishop. The Manchester United goalkeeper has struggled with the reserve side this past season, putting Mansfield on red alert. The League Two club are apparently eyeing a loan deal for Bishop, whose move away from Old Trafford could be on the cards this summer, albeit just temporarily.
Nathan Bishop: Player Profile
A product of the Southend youth academy, Nathan Bishop joined Manchester United at the start of last year. Despite his age, the youngster was already coming on the back of a considerable amount of experience in the lower leagues of English football.
In fact, the goalkeeper notched up as many as 39 competitive matches for Southend. Although he conceded a whopping 83 goals in the process, Bishop ended up gaining the attention of Manchester United scouts.
However, the 21-year-old has had a difficult time at Old Trafford. He was initially drafted into Man United’s reserve side, where he has found himself behind Matej Kovar in the pecking order.
Although Bishop did train with the pros for a while during the course of the 2020/21 campaign, he has mustered only two appearances in Premier League 2. He did star in the 6-0 win over Salford in the EFL trophy, where he kept the only clean sheet of his career with the United U23s.
Should Ole Let Bishop Go?
Manchester United are facing a major dilemma in the goalkeeping department. Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer is already torn between David de Gea and Dean Henderson as the club’s number one ‘keeper next season.
In addition, the Red Devils are bracing themselves for the departure of Lee Grant and Sergio Romero. It might open up a vacancy in the goalkeeping unit, especially if the club do get rid of either de Gea or Henderson in the summer.
Unfortunately for Nathan Bishop, his prospects at Old Trafford are non-existent at the moment. The Englishman, despite his experience, is yet to even prove himself with the reserve team. He has also received major criticism for his tendency to concede too many goals.
A move away from Manchester, therefore, might be the best option for both parties involved. United are no short of goalkeepers at the moment while Bishop will be keen on getting some game-time under his belt. Mansfield Town, in that regard, appears to be an excellent destination for the youngster this summer.
