Recent reports from The Sun state that David de Gea is prepared to stay at Manchester United next season as he believes that he can emerge as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice goalkeeper once again.
The report further states that the Red Devils are in no mood to part ways with the Spanish shot-stopper despite interest from top European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain.
David de Gea’s Inconsistent 2020/21 Season At The Old Trafford
There’s no doubt about the fact that the Spaniard has been one of his side’s best performers over the past decade; however, some of his individual errors in between the sticks last season paved the way for Dean Henderson to put up a strong challenge for the number one role.
Solskjaer trusted him in arguably Manchester United’s most important game of the season as he was recalled for the Europa League final against Villarreal last month; however, after failing to save eleven penalties, he let his team down with the last kick of the ball.
David de Gea faced some harsh criticism for the same, but, with the current reports, it seems as if he is determined to fight for his place in the starting eleven.
On the other hand, Dean Henderson believes that a change in goal is the way forward.
“I’ve spoke about this for years,” – The Englishman said.
“Whether it gets me in trouble speaking about it, whether it holds me back at certain times, it probably does.”
“But at the end of the day it’ll happen one day and I know it’ll happen, so I’m just going to keep working hard day in, day out and my time will come. I was 100 per cent born ready.”
“I’ve just got to be ready for when that time comes. There’s no excuses when you step over that white line. You’ve got to puff your chest out and go for it and everything that you’ve put in day in, day out, all the training, everything, pays off.”
A Huge Dilemma For Solskjaer?
Given the pandemic situation, it’s doubtful if any potential suitor would be willing to invest £60 million on a 30-year-old goalkeeper. So it might not be possible for the club to offload him in the ongoing transfer window.
However, in my personal opinion, Dean Henderson should be Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. Despite looking shaky at times, he has done enough to earn himself a place in the starting eleven. At 23, the England international will develop with each passing game and given his sky-high potential; a healthy completion will only push him to do better.
In June last year, the Norwegian tactician stated that Henderson is destined to become United’s next number one, and finally, it seems like the time has come.
