Recent reports from The Sun state that Manchester United are keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks in the upcoming transfer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to add to his options at the centre of the park.
The report further states that the Englishman could be available for a fee of around £25million; however, the Lilywhites may hold out for a bigger offer.
Does The Move Make Any Sense?
Having fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho, Harry Winks managed to start just nine games in the Premier League this season. The lack of regular game-time certainly left him frustrated as Gareth Southgate dropped him from the England squad and even left him out of consideration for the Euro 2020.
However, Manchester United’s interest in the 25-year-old has come as a bit of surprise as no one could ever imagine something like this even in their wild dreams.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer indeed needs to strengthen the defensive midfield department, but Winks is far from being the ideal candidate for the job. He isn’t better than anyone already present at the club – be it Fred or Scott McTominay. Moreover, having been linked with stars like Yves Bissouma, Declan Rice, and Wilfried Ndidi in the past, it’s quite obvious that the fans will feel let down if Winks – who has barely ever managed to achieve consistency at the club he has been playing for all his life – actually ends up moving to the Old Trafford.
Besides, signing Winks will definitely lead to an over-crowded midfield, and it might even force Donny van de Beek to spend another season on the sidelines. Hence, Solskjaer should avoid the deal at all costs.
