According to Abendzeitung, as cited by FussballTransfers, Sven Ulreich is tipped for a return to Bayern Munich. The German goalkeeper’s contract with Hamburger SV has been recently terminated, meaning he is available as a free agent in the market this summer. The report speculates that there is room for Ulreich to return at Bayern Munich, potentially as the primary alternative for Manuel Neuer.
Sven Ulreich’s Spell At Hamburger SV
Sven Ulreich moved to Hamburger SV last summer on a free transfer, putting an end to his five-year spell at Bayern Munich. He had to leave following the departure of Alexander Nubel, as the custodian signed a one-year contract with HSV.
Ulreich was the club’s first-choice goalkeeper throughout the 2020/21 campaign for Die Rothosen, featuring in 32 matches in 2.Bundesliga. He had an average season at the Volksparkstadion, keeping nine clean sheets and conceding a total of 40 goals.
The 32-year-old’s performances in between the sticks weren’t enough to help HSV finish in the top three, thereby missing out on the chance to seal promotion. Now it appears the north German giants are ready to entrust the goalkeeping responsibilities to younger players, as they look to reshape their squad ahead of the start of the new campaign.
Should Bayern Munich Pounce On Ulreich?
Bayern Munich are facing a delicate situation in the goalkeeper department. Their first-choice ‘keeper Manuel Neuer is still performing well, leaving the young and talented Alexander Nubel out of contention.
Given the promise Nubel has, however, the Bayern bosses are now being pressured to send the former Schalke goalkeeper out on loan for at least a couple of years. It could potentially open up a vacancy in the goalkeeping department, as someone needs to step in as the alternative for Neuer.
Ulreich could be that ideal someone, having played at the Allianz Arena for five years prior to his move to HSV. The veteran shot-stopper already knows the team well and at the age of 32, he will not demand a lot of game-time.
Bayern Munich won’t have to spend much either, as Ulreich is available for free in the summer, after seeing out his contract at the Volksparkstadium – making him an ideal target for the Bavarians.
