In a recent interview with Football Insider, Kevin Campbell has urged Liverpool to land Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer. The former Everton striker said, “Tielemans would be a brilliant signing.
“I think he would fit in at Liverpool perfectly. He will add more of a goal threat as well, especially from range.
“He is a very good footballer and he would be very capable filling the void left by Wijnaldum.
“Listen, when you are Liverpool and you lose a player like Wijnaldum you have to replace him with quality. Wijnaldum is so underrated and when he is not there, Liverpool miss him.
“Klopp will buy right though. He knows what he needs and he will purchase correctly.”
Tielemans’ Outstanding Form At The King Power Stadium This Season
Tielemans has enjoyed another impressive season with the Foxes as he has produced a run of eye-catching displays at the centre of Brendan Rodgers’ midfield. The 24-year-old has participated in 51 matches for the East Midlands side this term, netting nine goals and securing six assists in multiple competitions.
The Belgian playmaker has given a good account of himself by averaging 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.3 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game in this Premier League campaign. He has even distributed the ball relatively well after making 81.7% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
What Will The Foxes Midfield Ace Add To Jurgen Klopp’s Side?
Tielemans is a hard-working presence in central midfield and can make some clever runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty box. He can create decent chances for others around him and is a pure striker of the ball that makes him a threat from long range.
It was Tielemans’ long-range stunner that helped Leicester win the FA Cup this season. Hence, Liverpool can benefit from adding a goal-scoring midfielder like him, as the lack of goals from midfield was an area of concern for Jurgen Klopp in the recently concluded Premier League campaign. At 24, the Belgian’s best years are ahead of him, which the Merseyside giants could look to capitalize on if they can find a way to bring him to the northwest of England this summer.
Tielemans will also add some bite and steel to Liverpool’s midfield and would offer more competition for Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and James Milner at Anfield in the coming seasons. Hence, Klopp should listen to Campbell’s advice by engineering a move for the Belgian sensation in this off-season as he has what it takes to serve as a decent replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum in the years to come.
