Following West Bromwich Albion’s relegation from the Premier League, former Baggies star Kevin Phillips has tipped Leeds United to rope in Matheus Pereira during the ongoing summer window. The Brazilian has been West Brom’s only shining light in such a dreadful season and is unlikely to play in the Championship again amid interest from Aston Villa, Leicester City, West Ham as well as Leeds.
The Whites had to wait for 16 long years to experience Premier League football, but they made their return a memorable one by securing a ninth-placed league finish under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa. They have been spot on with their signings so far and the club’s Director of Football Victor Orta must make the call whether to secure the services of the 25-year-old former Sporting CP star.
Best suited as a ‘number 10’, Pereira is equally effective from the wide with his goal-poaching attributes and set-piece skills. The Baggies only bagged 35 league goals this term and the Selecao star contributed in half of those (11 goals and 6 assists in 33 appearances) showcasing his sheer excellence in the first-ever Premier League campaign.
“I think it would suit their style. Leeds are an exciting, free-flowing team, you can express yourself in that side. We’ve seen that with players like Raphinha and Jack Harrison this year, that they can just go and play with freedom, but you have to be prepared to work your socks off and that’s something Pereira would have to take to another level.”
The ex-Albion striker told Football Insider on whether the West Yorkshire hotshots should make their move for the prolific attacker.
Why Leeds Should Tie Pereira Down Despite His Limitations
Bielsa demands high work ethics from his players. Their tireless sprints have troubled the league’s ‘big six’, particularly Manchester City who not only failed to beat them in either of the fixtures but also suffered a shocking home defeat even though the visitors played with ten men for the majority of the contest. The iconic Argentine would never compromise on his philosophy and vision and, therefore, didn’t think twice before dropping Rodrigo who has arguably been the most high-profile recruit following last year’s promotion.
Although the discussions are already being held over a potential ‘Bielsa burnout’ or ‘second season syndrome’, the Whites have entertained all with their brand of football and headstrong display. Having said that, Leeds United must keep on bolstering the current setup and sign Matheus Pereira who holds all the traits on becoming the worthy successor of veteran Pablo Hernandez.
