Recent reports from the Metro suggest that Premier League giants Manchester United are keen on signing Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak in the summer transfer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to add to his goalkeeping options.
The report further states that the Red Devils are planning to offer David de Gea as part of an ambitious swap deal that could set the Spaniard on his way to Wanda Metropolitano if Atletico Madrid negotiate a fair deal.
Oblak’s Amazing Season At The Wanda Metropolitano
The 28-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers of his side since his move to Spain in 2014. With 18 clean sheets in 38 league appearances for The Rojiblancos this season, Jan Oblak enjoyed an extraordinary season in La Liga and was one of the main reasons behind Atletico’s surge to the top of the league table.
Going by his stats, the Slovenian managed to put up some impressive numbers on the board this term as he conceded just 0.63 goals per 90 minutes in the Spanish top-flight. Moreover, with a save percentage of 78 and an overall WhoScored rating of 6.87, the Slovenia international turned out to be one of his team’s most influential players.
It’ll be an understatement to say that he’d be a great addition to the present United side.
What Will He Bring To The Theatre Of Dreams?
There’s no doubt about the fact that David de Gea has been one of United’s standout performers over the past decade; however, his recent dip in form has left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a massive decision to make. Moreover, given the 30-year-old’s humongous wages, his departure will provide the board with a major and much-needed financial boost. On the other hand, Dean Henderson hasn’t been too reliable between the sticks either.
Jan Oblak’s arrival would certainly solve the number one crisis at Old Trafford, but Solskjaer has several key problems to address before he can even start considering a change in goal. A centre-back, a defensive midfielder and a right-winger should be the board’s topmost priority heading into the transfer window. However, if United can afford the luxury of having Oblak in goal after addressing all the major issues, they should definitely try and get the deal over the line.
