According to The Sun, as cited by Yorkshire Post, Leeds United are interested in Sam Johnstone. They are among many clubs keen on the services of the West Brom goalkeeper – a list that includes Europa League finalists Manchester United. The Baggies, though, have slapped a £20 million price-tag for their star goalkeeper this summer despite their relegation to the Championship.
Sam Johnstone’s Successful 2020/21 Campaign
Sam Johnstone has been one of the bright sparks in an otherwise dire campaign for West Bromwich Albion in the recently concluded 2020/21 campaign. A former member of the United youth academy, the goalkeeper has shown fine form in between the sticks, despite managing to retain only six clean sheets in 37 league outings.
In fact, the 28-year-old has made the most number of saves (161) than anyone else in the Premier League this season. His tally of two penalties saved is also joint highest in the league, along with Lukasz Fabianski of West Ham.
Johnstone has produced inspiring performances during certain matches, keeping his team in the fight. His performances in between the sticks had served as a confidence booster for the club as well. It is also why the West Brom goalkeeper has been included in England’s provisional 30 man squad and is more than likely to be a part of the final squad for the upcoming Euros.

Should Leeds United Splash The Cash On Johnstones?
Leeds United‘s interest in signing new goalkeepers suggests that they are keen on finding a replacement for Kiko Casilla and an able competitor for Illan Meslier.
A fee of £20 million, though, could be more than a risk, especially in this current financial climate. Although there is no question over the quality of Sam Johnstone, he might be a bit too overqualified to simply serve as a competitor for Meslier.
The Frenchman himself has already established himself as a fine goalkeeper, with a save percentage far better than Johnstone. There are some question marks over his decision making and insecurity, at times, but that is likely to improve as the player grows older, gaining more valuable experience.
Leeds United, therefore, should definitely set their sights towards a cheaper alternative who can serve as an understudy for Meslier next season. Mat Ryan, for one, could be an excellent choice, provided Arsenal do not make his move from Brighton permanent in the summer.
