According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid are mulling over the exit of Marco Asensio. Although the Spanish giants are not very keen on selling the star playmaker, they could entertain the possibility of a potential sale, should any club meet their €50 million demands. It appears Los Blancos are open to signing a top player, should it require the departure of Asensio.
Marco Asensio’s Disappointing 2020/21 Campaign
The 2020/21 campaign has not done Marco Asensio any favours as the Real Madrid playmaker has been average, to say the least. It was indeed a difficult season, right from the beginning as he was coming on the back of a long injury layoff.
Although Asensio did rack up 35 Laliga appearances throughout the course of the campaign, he could fit in the starting lineup in only 21 of them. The attacker often lacked consistency in his game, failing to offer any creativity going forward.
The Spaniard was somewhat lucky with the game-time he was given as well, as Eden Hazard spent a lot of time on the sidelines while Zinedine Zidane wasn’t all too keen on using other options like Isco and Rodrygo, as far as the first-team is concerned.
Asensio ended the 2020/21 campaign with just five goals and two assists, which is simply not acceptable for a player of his calibre. It could also put his Real Madrid career in jeopardy, as Los Blancos brace themselves for a summer of change.
Should Real Madrid Cash In On Asensio?
Real Madrid are no short of attacking players, who are more than capable of replacing Asensio. The likes of Rodrygo and Hazard will be keen on making a bigger impact next season while Gareth Bale, Martin Odegaard, Brahim Diaz and perhaps even Reinier are set to return to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.
The departure of coach Zidane makes things even more interesting, knowing the fact that the new manager might entertain the idea of giving the lesser-used players a chance to perform, including Isco and even Bale.
Asensio’s €50 million sale, in that regard, could go a long way in giving Real Madrid some useful financial boost as they look to strengthen their depth in the midfield and in the defensive department.
The Spaniard has never been the same since his serious knee injury and his struggles in the 2020/21 campaign were enough to suggest the fact that the playmaker might not be as influential for Real Madrid in the future. Los Blancos, therefore, should definitely cash in on Marco Asensio this summer, although it remains to be seen whether any of the clubs are willing to meet their €50m demands, especially in the current financial climate.
