Vestergaard’s Impressive Season In The Premier League
Vestergaard is having a solid season at the St. Mary’s Stadium after putting in a run of dominant displays at the heart of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s defence. The Danish powerhouse has appeared in 27 matches for the Saints this term, find the back of the net on three occasions across all competitions.
The 28-year-old has been a rock at the back for Southampton as he is averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 4.0 clearances and 0.8 shots per 90 minutes in Premier League football this season. He has even distributed the ball quite well out from the back based on his pass success rate of 83.3% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
The way Vestergaard has been playing this season, it is no wonder that Spurs are looking at him as he would add more depth and some physicality to their defensive department if Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy decides to seal a move for his services this summer.
Will Vestergaard Be A Good Fit For Tottenham?
Vestergaard can use his long 1.99m frame to dominate the opposition in the air. He has got incredible strength that allows him to command his penalty box with authority and conviction. Furthermore, the 21-time Denmark international can sense the danger quickly and can make some important clearances for his team. He can even time his tackles well to earn the ball back for his team.
At 28, Vestergaard is currently playing at his prime and would bolster Tottenham’s defensive options significantly for the coming seasons. He is good enough to secure a regular starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season. Hence, the Danish centre-half could prove to be a decent fit for Spurs as long as they are willing to play him every week as he has what it takes to play an influential role for them in the years to come.
A defender of Vestergaard’s quality will offer some healthy competition for Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Toby Alderweireld at North London. However, whether Spurs end up making a move for Vestergaard this summer remains to be seen. However, the identity of their new permanent manager could very well end up determining the fate of this transfer.
