In a recent report, Fanatik has mentioned that Liverpool are ready to table an offer for Trabzonspor custodian Uğurcan Çakır in the coming days. It is believed that the Reds have been closely monitoring his progress in Turkish football since last season and are now ready to launch a move to bring the talented goalkeeper to Anfield in the summer (via Fanatik).
Cakir’s Growing Influence In Turkish Football
Cakir is experiencing one of the best seasons of his young career as he has managed to be a consistent performer for his current employers over the past ten months. The Turkish shot-stopper has made 36 appearances for Trabzonspor this term, conceding 34 goals and securing 13 clean sheets across all competitions.
The 25-year-old deserves a pat on the back for averaging 0.7 clearances and 7.7 long balls per game in the Turkish Super Lig this season. However, Cakir has given away the ball far too often, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 58.7% in league football (stats via whoscored).
The Antalya-born keeper’s current contract with Trabzonspor is set to run out in the summer of 2024, so the Reds will have to table a sizable offer if they intend to sign him ahead of the new campaign.
Will Cakir Be A Good Option For Liverpool?
Standing at 1.91m, Cakir is a dominant presence inside his penalty box and possesses excellent reflexes that help him to pull off a few solid saves at the back. He can read the danger quickly and is not afraid to come out of his lines to make a clearance if required. However, the seven-time Turkey international has to work on improving his upper-body strength if he wants to be a success story in the Premier League where he might struggle to cope with the physical nature of English football.
Cakir has the skillset to play as a suitable backup to Alisson Becker, who remains Jurgen Klopp’s undisputed number one choice for the goal-keeping position. However, the Turkish keeper will undoubtedly be an upgrade over the error-prone Adrian and the inexperienced Caoimhin Kelleher at Anfield next season.
At 25, Cakir is about to enter the prime stage of his playing career. Hence, we can expect him to play some of his best football in the coming seasons which makes him a decent option for the Reds to consider this summer. All in all, the Trabzonspor star will be an excellent addition to Liverpool’s squad as he is already good enough to play a sporadic role and has the potential to give Alisson a run for his money in a few years time.
