Manchester United clashed heads with AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico earlier tonight as they looked to secure a positive result and proceed into the finals of the UEFA Europa League. The hosts seemed to be in control of the game in the earlier stages, but it was Edinson Cavani who broke the deadlock in the 39-minute-mark as he capitalised on Fred’s through ball. However, Roma put up a strong performance in the second half as they scored three goals to pile the pressure on United, but it was Cavani who killed off the game in the 68th minute. Having won 8-5 on aggregate, Manchester United finally advance to their first major final under the stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskajer.
Let’s take a look at how each Manchester United player performed during the match against the Yellow and Reds.
David de Gea – 9/10
The Spanish shot-stopper made some exceptional saves over the course of the game to stop the Roma frontmen from finding the back of the net.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7/10
The Englishman prevented the opposition players from creating menace down the right flank. However, he was replaced by Brandon Williams at half-time.
Eric Bailly – 6/10
The Ivorian international made numerous crucial blocks and tackles to keep things tidy at the back in the first half but failed to repeat the same in the second forty-five minutes.
Harry Maguire – 6.5/10
The skipper paired well with Eric Bailly in defence; however, he could have done better to prevent Edin Dzeko from finding the back of the net.
Luke Shaw – 7/10
The English left-back put up a decent performance defensively before being replaced by Alex Telles at half-time.
Donny van de Beek – 6/10
The Dutchman didn’t have too much influence on the game and often looked lost at the centre of the park as he misplaced the simplest of passes time and again.
Fred – 7/10
The Brazilian midfielder was mostly limited to the defensive duties tonight, but he got himself the assist for United’s first goal of the game.
Paul Pogba – 6.5/10
The Frenchman made some important tackles to win the ball back for his side. His ball distribution seemed decent as well.
Bruno Fernandes – 7.5/10
The Portuguese playmaker lacked the clinical touch in front of the goal, but he set up a number of decent chances for his teammates, especially the one which led to Cavani’s second goal.
Edinson Cavani – 9/10
Once again, the Uruguayan international dropped a mesmerising performance as he bagged a brace to help the Red Devils proceed into the finals of the competition. His movement in and around the box was a constant source of menace for the Roma defenders.
Mason Greenwood – 6/10
The 19-year-old had a couple of golden chances to get his name on the scoresheet tonight be he failed to capitalise on them.
SUBSTITUTES:
Brandon Williams – 6/10
The youngster didn’t have much to do after coming on.
Alex Telles – 4/10
The Brazilian international turned out to be a disaster defensively. He did absolutely nothing to stop Pedro’s cross and even scored an own goal in the 83-minute-mark.
Nemanja Matic – 6/10
The Siberian international added some much-needed solidity to United’s midfield.
Marcus Rashford – 6/10
He had a couple of shots, but that’s all he had to offer.
Juan Mata – N/A
Played too little to warrant a rating.
