Tottenham Hotspur‘s quest to gain silverware comes to a disappointing end as they lose 1-0 in the final of the Carabao Cup. It was a demoralising defeat for the Lilywhites, especially in the aftermath of Jose Mourinho’s departure, as they struggled to get into the game, with Manchester City dominating much of the possession.
Although Ryan Mason’s men did manage to hold the Citizens off, for the most part, a late goal from Aymeric Laporte was enough to seal the cup for the Premier League leaders.
Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings Vs Manchester City
Hugo Lloris 7.5/10
Hugo Lloris had a busy night up against the Manchester City attack that completely dominated the game. The Tottenham skipper responded well, making some good saves before ultimately getting beaten late on.
Serge Aurier 6.5/10
Serge Aurier struggled to impose his authority on the right-hand side of the Spurs backline, which is hardly a surprise as he was up against one of the strongest attacks in Europe.
Toby Alderweireld 8/10
Toby Alderweireld did what he could in marshalling the Tottenham backline. In fact, he deserves a lot of credit for remaining solid for the most part of the game, making a flurry of important interceptions, tackles and blocks.
Eric Dier 7.5/10
Eric Dier complemented Alderweireld’s defensive work, using his physical and aerial superiority to good effect. He was poor in his forward passing, but Mason would have hardly expected him to excel.
Sergio Reguilon 5/10
Sergio Reguilon’s poor run of form continues as it was yet another ineffective display. The Spaniard was a liability at the back but struggled particularly with his forays down the flanks, lacking any real idea or craft.
Harry Winks 6/10
Harry Winks couldn’t make much of an impact in the game, even though the Englishman did offer some assurance in possession. He was overrun by the opposition as the game progressed.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 6/10
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was singled out against a Manchester City midfield that looked too dominant. The Dane was also ineffective going forward, which led to an overall disappointing evening.
Giovani Lo Celso 5/10
Giovani Lo Celso was absolutely poor, to say the least. The Argentine never really got into the groove, failing to offer any real ball progression and mostly remaining anonymous in midfield.
Lucas Moura 6.5/10
Lucas Moura worked hard to create something for Tottenham going forward. Unfortunately, he did not have enough support to work his way around the final third.
Harry Kane 6.5/10
Harry Kane was very quiet after making his return to the starting lineup. He cannot be blamed, though, as the entire Tottenham side were indeed outclassed and lacked a certain intensity that was shown by Borussia Dortmund, or even Leeds United not long ago, against the same opposition.
Son Heung-Min 5/10
Son Heung-Min was perhaps the worst attacker for Tottenham as he failed to offer anything going forward. He got isolated very quickly as well, leading to a lack of activity from the Lilywhites in the attacking side of the game.
SUBSTITUTES
Moussa Sissoko 5/10
Moussa Sissoko was slightly culpable for allowing Laporte to come out of nowhere and beat him in a headed duel, as it ultimately led to Manchester City’s winner.
Gareth Bale 5/10
Gareth Bale did not find any space or support to utilise his skills after coming on midway through the second half.
Dele Alli N/A
A late replacement for Hojbjerg.
Steven Bergwijn N/A
A late replacement for Aurier.
