Tottenham Hotspur entertained Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this evening hoping to pick up all three points at home. The North London outfit made a slow start to the game as they conceded the opening goal at the half-hour mark when Danny Ings found the back of the net with a pin-point header for the Saints.
However, Spurs came out with a purpose in the second half and found the leveller via Gareth Bale’s world-class finish from a tight angle. Ryan Mason’s men were awarded a late penalty which Heung-min Son scored as Tottenham secured a hard-fought 2-1 win at the English capital.
Let’s take a look at how each Tottenham player fared during the clash against the Saints.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 7/10
The French keeper made a few solid saves and did well to restrict the Saints to just one goal during the 90 minutes.
RB: Serge Aurier – 7.5/10
He was strong in the air and made several tackles to disrupt the opposition’s flow in the game. However, Aurier didn’t offer much in the attacking end of the pitch.
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 6.5/10
The Belgian international cleared his lines when needed and won a few important aerial duels for his team.
CB: Eric Dier – 6.5/10
The English defensive ace did what was asked of him at the back and was also tidy with his passing.
LB: Sergio Reguilon – 6.5/10
The Spaniard won the ball back a couple of times but struggled to give a good account of himself in the Southampton half.
CM: Tanguy Ndombele – 5.5/10
The Frenchman struggled to get a foothold in the game and got replaced in the final quarter of the match.
CM: Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 6/10
He tried to make life difficult for the opposition but kept the ball moving at the centre of the park.
RM: Gareth Bale – 9/10
The Wales international was a constant threat to the opposition and scored a great goal in the second half to equalise for Spurs. He deserves to be named the man of the match.
CAM: Giovani Lo Celso – 6/10
The Argentine playmaker tried to make things happen but offered very little in the final third.
LM: Heung-min Son – 7.5/10
Son was having a frustrating game but did not give up and made some encouraging runs down the left flank. He kept his calm to convert a late penalty which gave his team all three points today.
ST: Lucas Moura – 6.5/10
The Brazilian striker was not shy of having a shot at goal but was not clinical enough in front of the Southampton goal.
Substitutes:
CM: Harry Winks – 6/10
He added some energy to the Tottenham midfield.
CAM: Erik Lamela – 6/10
Lamela made one promising run going forward.
ST: Steven Bergwijn – N/A
He did not get enough minutes to warrant a rating.
