Aston Villa entertained Fulham at Villa Park earlier today, hoping to pick up a positive result at home. Both teams cancelled each other out in the first 45 minutes and went into the half-time interval without anything to split them.
The Cottagers kept themselves in the game and scored the opening goal in the 61st minute courtesy of Aleksandar Mitrović’s neat finish after capitalising on a howler from Tyrone Mings. However, Trezeguet came off the bench to turn the match on its head by scoring two quick-fire goals for the home team. Ollie Watkins finally managed to get the points secure when he found the back of the net in the 87th minute as the contest finished 3-1 in favour of Dean Smith’s men.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player performed during the match against the Cottagers.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 7/10
The Argentine keeper made some key saves to restrict the Fulham attackers to just one goal during the 90 minutes.
RB: Matty Cash – 6.5/10
Cash was defensively solid and managed to engineer one good chance in the opposition half.
CB: Ezri Konsa – 6.5/10
Konsa passed the ball with a lot of conviction and made a couple of essential clearances for his side.
CB: Tyrone Mings – 5/10
He made a howler to gift Mitrovic the opening goal of the game just after the hour mark. However, he deserves credit for not giving up and made up for his earlier error by setting up Trezeguet’s all-important equaliser late in the game.
LB: Matt Targett – 6/10
Targett kept things tidy at the back but failed to influence the game in the final third.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 7/10
The Brazilian midfield ace got stuck in with a few tackles and made some driving runs with the ball as well.
CM: John McGinn – 7.5/10
The Scottish talent was full of energy at the centre of the park. He completed quite a few dribbles during the game and was always willing to have a strike at the goal.
RM: Bertrand Traore – 8/10
Traore caused all sorts of problems for the Fulham defenders and ended the game with a deserved assist to his name. He was full of trickery and deserves credit for creating some meaningful chances for others around him.
CAM: Morgan Sanson – 6.5/10
He helped his teammates out at the back by making two important interceptions. However, he offered very little in the attacking third.
LM: Anwar El Ghazi – 6/10
El Ghazi had a quiet game in the Fulham half and got substituted just after the hour mark.
ST: Ollie Watkins – 7.5/10
Watkins got his name on the scoresheet in the match’s dying embers, which ensured the three points for his team. He seems to be growing in confidence with each game.
Substitutes:
LM: Trezeguet – 8/10
His substitution was a real game-changer as he scored a rapid-fire brace that completed the comeback for the Villans.
ST: Keinan Davis – 7/10
Davis made some clever runs with the ball and did well to bag an assist after coming off the bench.
CM: Jacob Ramsey – 6/10
He added some energy to the Aston Villa midfield.
