In a recent report, The Daily Mirror has claimed that Everton are facing competition from Spain in pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks this summer. It is believed that the Toffees will have to rival Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Sevilla in the race to secure the signature of the English midfield ace at the end of this campaign (via The Daily Mirror).
Winks’ Inconsistent Form At The English Capital This Season
The Hemel Hempstead-born talent is having an up and down season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Winks has struggled to be consistent with his performances for Spurs this term and has lost his first-team privileges under Jose Mourinho’s tutelage recently. The 25-year-old has registered two goals, two assists and six yellow cards in 24 appearances for the North London giants in this campaign across all fronts.
The ten-time England international deserves some credit for being a valuable member of Tottenham’s starting XI in Europe where he has averaged 1.4 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 1.3 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the UEFA Europa League. Winks has also been exceptional when distributing possession from midfield after completing 90% of his attempted passes in European football (stats via whoscored).
The English sensation is still under contract at Tottenham until the summer of 2024, so the Toffees might struggle to arrange a move to bring him to the northwest of England when the transfer window commences later this year.
What Will The England International Bring To The Table?
Winks has a great work ethic and can cover a lot of ground at the centre of the park. He is a decent tackler of the ball and has got the tenacity to earn possession back for his side. The English midfielder loves to dribble with the ball and make some clever runs towards the opposition penalty box.
However, Winks needs to add more goals and assists to his game if he wants to be a regular feature at the highest level. He can function in a box-to-box role and can also play as the anchorman in midfield due to his ability to influence the game at both ends of the field. However, finding consistency has been a big problem for him during his time under Mourinho’s stewardship.
Is Winks The Right Fit For Ancelotti?
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti needs to add more depth to his squad if he wants his side to compete for some silverware in the coming seasons. Winks could serve as a good utility player at Goodison Park and has what it takes to compete with Andre Gomes, Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Tom Davies for one of the midfield spots in Ancelotti’s first XI.
At 25, the English midfield enforcer is about to enter his prime, so the Toffees manager will fancy his chances of getting the best out of the player if they can lure him to Goodison Park this summer. All in all, Winks will be a good fit for Everton as long as they can get him on a cut-price deal this summer.
