In a recent report, The Telegraph has mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a keen eye on LOSC Lille defender Sven Botman. It is believed that Spurs boss Jose Mourinho wants to secure the signature of the Dutch centre-back to strengthen his defensive department for next season (via The Telegraph).
Botman’s Impressive Form For Lille This Season
Botman is enjoying a brilliant campaign at Lille as he has been responsible for producing several commanding displays at the centre of Christophe Galtier’s defence. The ex-Ajax youngster has been involved in 39 matches for the French club this term, picking up one assist and five yellow cards in multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old has given a good account of himself when defending inside his half. He is averaging 0.9 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes in the Ligue 1 and the UEFA Europa League this season. The Dutch youngster has been excellent when distributing possession from the back after making 85.4% of his attempted passes in both those competitions (stats via whoscored).
Botman is currently under contract at Stade Pierre Mauroy until the summer of 2025, so it would take a big offer for Spurs to land the Dutch starlet when the transfer window commences later this year.
What Will The Dutch Defensive Ace Add To Jose Mourinho’s Team?
Botman is a towering presence inside his penalty area and can use his strong 1.95m frame to outmuscle the opposition and win most of his aerial duels. He has transformed himself into a reliable defender at the back for Lille this season. The Dutch sensation is often quick to react to the danger and can make some crucial interceptions for his team. He also cleared his lines when needed but is otherwise, a tidy passer of the ball which makes him a great fit for Jose Mourinho’s style of play at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Botman is one of Dutch football’s brightest young defenders, so landing him would be a massive coup for Spurs in the long-run. He is currently playing at a high level and would undoubtedly add more quality to Mourinho’s fragile defence. The Dutch whizkid could serve as a decent replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who is edging closer towards the twilight years of his playing career.
The Lille prospect is a player Mourinho can build his team around, so the Portuguese head coach should consider launching a move to bring him to the English capital in this off-season. At 21, Botman has got the potential to become a world-class player in his position someday and can help Spurs challenge for some top honours in the coming seasons.
