According to kicker, as cited by Yorkshire Post, Leeds United are interested in Ludwig Augustinsson. The Werder Bremen left-back could be available in the summer, with the Bundesliga outfit ready to offload the player for a seven-figure fee. Augustinsson’s current contract at Bremen expires at the end of next season meaning the Whites could potentially bag a bargain.
Ludwig Augustinsson: Player Profile
Ludwig Augustinsson has been a part of the Werder Bremen side since 2017 when he joined the club from FC Copenhagen. A native of Sweden, he didn’t take much settling into the league either, becoming an invaluable part of the club’s backline.
Under the leadership of Florian Kohfeldt, Augustinsson has mostly been utilised as a wing-back in a three-man backline. It makes complete sense as the left-back specialises in attacking the opposition with his forays down the flanks. He is particularly impressive when it comes to whipping in crosses into the box from the wider areas of the pitch.
Augustinsson is also considered quite proficient from set-pieces. He is, however, quite injury prone, having spent numerous short spells on the sidelines during his time at Bremen, even allowing Felix Agu to make his Bundesliga breakthrough in the ongoing campaign. The Swede struggles in playing as a traditional left-back as well, often lacking the discipline.
Is Augustinsson A Good Buy For Leeds United?
Leeds United have somewhat impressed upon their return to the Premier League. However, the club will undoubtedly set their sights on a bigger prize than a mid-table finish, and that is where they may require depth and variety to their squad.
Especially in the left-back department, the Whites have appeared overly reliant on the services of the versatile Stuart Dallas. His absence has left Marcelo Bielsa to rely on the services of Ezgjan Alioski, who is not a traditional left-back by any means.
Although Augustinsson himself is more suited as a wing-back, he is more natural when it comes to the defensive side of the game. He can thus provide that tactical variety at Bielsa’s disposal, giving him the license to switch between a back three and a back four depending on the situation.
The 26-year-old does need to work on his fitness record, though, but with his contract expiring at the end of next season, coupled with his experience at the highest level of football, Augustinsson could indeed be a viable option for Leeds United this summer as they look to improve their roster.
