Chelsea locked horns with Liverpool at Anfield earlier tonight, hoping to pick up a win and move into the top-four of the points table. The Reds fell prey to Thomas Tuchel’s men as they lost their 5th consecutive home match tonight. The 41-st minute goal from Mason Mount ended up being the difference between the two sides; however, it’ll be fair to say the visitors deserved to pick up all the 3 points as they defended exceptionally well and created more meaningful chances over the course of the game.
Let’s take a look at how each Chelsea player fared during the match against the Reds.
Edouard Mendy – 7/10
Even though the Senegalese shot-stopper didn’t have too many saves to make, he was quick to come off his line and collect the ball on several occasions. Secured a well-deserved clean sheet.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 7.5/10
The skipper put up an impressive performance at the back tonight as he made numerous interceptions and tackles to kept things tidy at the back.
Andreas Christensen – 8/10
The Danish centre-back dropped a defensive masterclass tonight as he made several clearances and blocks to help his side secure a clean sheet. His positional awareness was miles ahead of anyone else on the pitch.
Antonio Rudiger – 7.5/10
A rock at the back, Rudiger dominated aerially and co-ordinated well with Christensen throughout the ninety minutes.
Reece James – 6.5/10
The English full-back couldn’t display his usual attacking abilities down the right-hand side tonight; however, he did well to partner with Azpilicueta and contain Sadio Mane from creating menace for the visitors.
Jorginho – 8/10
The Italian international stayed deep and dictated the play throughout the match. He made several forward passes to slice-open the Liverpool defence.
N’Golo Kante – 8.5/10
The French midfielder put up a solid defensive performance in his own half of the pitch as he shielded the backline effectively throughout the ninety minutes. He did well to neutralise the attacking threats possessed by Curtis Jones and even got himself an assist for the first and only goal of the game.
Ben Chilwell – 6.5/10
Chilwell tried his best to help his teammates from the wide areas, but his crosses could hardly find the intended target.
Hakim Ziyech – 6/10
The Moroccan international didn’t have much to offer tonight. He often struggled to get himself involved in the attacking gameplay and had very little influence on the game. Was replaced by Pulisic around the 66-minute-mark.
Mason Mount – 9/10
The English youngster scored a wondrous goal to provide his side with the lead just a few minutes before the half-time whistle. As usual, his work-rate was exceptionally high.
Timo Werner – 6.5/10
The German striker did a lot of running and found himself in one-on-one situations on a couple of occasions, but he was pathetically let down by his finishing abilities.
SUBSTITUTES –
Christian Pulisic – 6/10
The American international didn’t really have much to do after coming on as the Blues focused more on defending the 1-0 lead.
Mateo Kovacic – 6/10
Provided the visitors with much-needed solidity at the centre of the park.
Kai Havertz – N/A
It was too late when he came on.
