In a recent report, Manchester Evening News has mentioned that Real Madrid are ready to part ways with Raphael Varane this summer. It is understood that Los Blancos are prepared to sell the French defensive ace to Manchester United during the summer transfer window (via Manchester Evening News).
Varane’s Impressive Season At The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
The 27-year-old is having another solid season at the Spanish capital as he has been responsible for producing a series of dominant displays at the centre of the Madrid backline. Varane has featured in 32 matches for the Spanish outfit this term, finding the back of the net twice in the process across various competitions.
The Lille-born sensation has done well to average 0.8 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.7 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has also been tidy when distributing possession out from defence after making 89.4% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Varane has proven himself to be one of the best centre-halves in European football over the past half a decade. He has won the FIFA World Cup in 2018 with France and has also tasted success in the UEFA Champions League quite a few times with Real Madrid. Hence, he has nothing left to prove and could be tempted with the opportunity to make a move to Old Trafford in search of a fresh adventure in the coming seasons.
What Does The French Centre-Back Bring To The Table?
Varane has enough pace under his belt to make some important recovering runs at the back and is usually a decent tackler of the ball. He can win the ball back for his team with ease and is not shy of putting his foot through the ball to make a clearance when required.
The Frenchman hardly gives away the ball when passing it out from the back and is a strong presence in the air as he can use his 1.91m frame to get the better of the opposition on the defensive third of the pitch.
Should Los Blancos Allow Varane To Leave?
Zinedine Zidane would find it difficult to replace a defender of Varane’s quality, so they should consider keeping him at the club beyond this summer. The 70-time France international is currently under contract at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2022 which explains why Los Blancos are preparing themselves for his exit at the end of this season.
The Spanish outfit has to sell him on a cut-price fee this summer or else risk losing him as a free agent when his contract runs out next year. Even then, the Madrid boss would be wise to try everything in his power to convince Varane to pen a new contract extension and should only consider selling him if he fails to come to an agreement with the player.
