Celtic enjoyed a winning start to life under interim chief John Kennedy as they knocked Aberdeen down 1-0 at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon. They had a pretty miserable campaign otherwise and a comeback next season would be prioritized despite Rangers’ rise in recent years. But they might lose an array of key individuals this summer including Kristoffer Ajer who has opted not to extend his stay beyond 2022.
The Norwegian sensation began his career in the middle of the park but was eventually shifted to a central defensive role by then boss Brendan Rodgers. It worked stupendously for the Glasgow giants and the 22-year-old cemented his place in the heart of the backline. A number of defensive stars parted ways over the past four years, however, it didn’t affect Ajer much who maintained his consistency with new partners.
Kennedy’s Take Following Ajer’s Stunning Show Against Aberdeen
His uprise grabbed the attenion of European hotshots who are now keeping close tabs on the youngster’s contract situation. Celtic are leaving no stone unturned to keep hold of their prized asset, but the things are getting trickier with every passing day as admitted by Kennedy himself.
“I’ve no doubt that there will be interest in him. He’s still very young and he’s an international player. With his profile of speed, size, technique and ability – there’s going to be interest in him. When that comes it’ll be the club and Kris himself making that decision. It’s important for the club going forward to keep players like him.”
The gaffer heaped praise on Ajer’s heroics against the Dons but, at the same time, highlighted (as quoted by the Daily Record) his contractual commitment.
Why Ajer’s Exit Would Be A Massive Blow For Celtic
Although the Norway international is staying focused to his defensive duties for the time being, his potential egress would leave a massive void unless they rope in an able alternative. Shane Duffy is unlikely to receive a permanent contract having failed to impress on his season-long loan move from Brighton & Hove Albion, whereas the injury woe of Christopher Jullien left them exposed for the majority of the campaign. Young Stephen Welsh has stepped in and delivered in recent weeks, but the Bhoys must find at least a couple of first-team centre-halves to emulate the success of the highly-rated prodigy.
Celtic, meanwhile, must aim to finish the season strongly and grab a hefty amount from Ajer’s transfer. The money should be reinvested to bolster the set-up and close the gap with Rangers who have turned the tables under Steven Gerrard.
