In a recent interview with Football Insider, ex-Premier League forward Kevin Campbell has reckoned that Daniel Sturridge would fit West Ham United‘s needs and could potentially become ‘a key player’ for them if Moyes decides to give him a chance at the London Stadium. Campbell said,
“I love Daniel Sturridge.
“I love how he plays.
“The question would be his fitness. He could be a wonderful addition for any team in the Premier League but it is his fitness and injury record which is a concern.
“If he could sort that out, he could be a key player for West Ham between now and the end of the season, definitely.”
Sturridge’s Fall From Grace In Recent Seasons
Sturridge has been a free agent since being released by Trabzonspor back in May last year after a breach of betting rules by the player. The 31-year-old was handed a four-match ban for the offence but is now looking for a new club as he is ready to play competitive football at the highest level.
The 26-time England international has got a wealth of experience in Premier League football after banging in 77 goals and providing 29 assists in 218 league matches so far. The last time he played in the English top-flight was with Liverpool back in the 2018-19 campaign when he registered two goals and one assist while averaging 1.0 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game in league football (stats via whoscored).
Frequent injuries have hampered his progress over the past decade, but on his day, Sturridge has what it takes to be a game-changer for his team. Hence, he could do a decent job for West Ham if Moyes decides to bring him back to the Premier League for the remainder of this campaign.
What Does The English Marksman Offer On The Pitch?
Sturridge has lost a yard of pace from his game as father time has caught up with him. However, he can still make some clever turns with the ball and can dribble past his marker using his close control and composure in the opposition half.
The English frontman excels at getting himself into some dangerous areas inside the opponent’s penalty box and can still be a lethal finisher in front of goal. However, he is far too injury-prone and doesn’t have the strength to hold the ball up anymore.
Should The Hammers Move In For Sturridge?
At the moment, the Hammers need a new forward who can play as a back-up to Michail Antonio in the coming months. Hence, Moyes would be wise to offer Sturridge a contract and bring him back to the Premier League as he will undeniably bolster the overall depth of his squad. He could score some important goals, which might help the Hammers secure European football at the end of this season. Therefore, it makes sense for the East London outfit to sign the ex-Liverpool star from the free-agent market.
