Rangers, a resurgent force under Steven Gerrard, are closing in on their first league glory after decade-long despair. The squad overhaul did the trick over the past couple of years and the transfer activity in recent windows proved to be spot on en route to dethroning bitter rivals Celtic. However, the new arrivals have sent many of their academy graduates way down the pecking order and according to Daily Record, forgotten Rangers youngster Jamie Barjonas is drawing the attention of the Championship clubs.
The 22-year-old former Scotland youth international was supposed to join USL Championship outfit Orange County on permanent terms, but a deal is yet to be figured out despite the ongoing talks. This has now alerted an array of Championship sides who are willing to have the midfield prodigy on loan to bolster themselves in the centre of the pitch.
Barjonas joined the Gers’ ranks at the age of 9 and went on to make 9 league appearances altogether since making his senior debut back in May 2017. But he was loaned out eventually following Gerrard’s arrival and earned some game-time with Bury in the English fourth tier, followed by Raith Rovers and Partick Thistle in the lower divisions of the Scottish pyramid.
Gerrard, meanwhile, heaped praise on the Bears starlet during pre-season when he scored a goal and knocked on the first-team doors.
“I’m pleased for Jamie. This is the first time since I have been in a first-team game that he has really shown personality. We know he has got that, we think he is better than what he’s been showing. So he will stay around us a bit longer and we’ll try and get him a few more opportunities.”
He told Rangers TV last summer while enjoying successive wins against Lyon and Nice.
What Should Be Next For Barjonas
Rangers youngster Barjonas failed to secure a loan move at the inception of the current campaign. He could not make it to Gerrard’s plans either and the presence of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and Bongani Zungu leaves little hope of securing a long-term future at his boyhood club. Moreover, Nnamdi Ofoborh would join the camp upon completion of the ongoing term and a transfer, therefore, would benefit all the parties involved.
Both Greg Docherty and Ross McCrorie were allowed to leave on permanent terms to grow their career elsewhere and as the things stand, Barjonas is expected to follow the footsteps of the promising pair in the forthcoming future.
