Liverpool entertained Manchester City at Anfield earlier this evening hoping to put an end to their miserable form at home. The Reds made a bright start to the game but struggled to create too many chances as they went into the half-time break goalless on the scoreline.
Man City got themselves ahead in the 49th minute courtesy of Ilkay Gundogan’s finish from close range. However, the Reds equalised just 14 minutes later when Mohamed Salah converted his penalty. However, the away team scored three quick-fire goals through another strike from Gundogan and a goal each from Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden after pouncing on some terrible errors from Alisson Becker. The match ended with the Merseyside giants suffering a dismal 4-1 defeat at Anfield.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed during the clash against the Reds.
GK: Alisson Becker – 1/10
The Brazilian keeper made a couple of nightmare errors to gift the three points to Man City. A day to forget for him.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 5/10
The English full-back was defensively in sixes and sevens. He also failed to create anything of note in the attacking third.
CB: Jordan Henderson – 5/10
Henderson struggled to command his backline and failed to deal with any of the rebounds which Man City scored from in the second half.
CB: Fabinho – 4/10
The Brazilian centre-back was far from his best and was slow to the loose ball on most occasions. Jurgen Klopp took a huge risk playing him, and it backfired.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 5/10
The Scottish full-back tried his best to get forward but with no real incision. He was also poor at the back as well.
CM: Thiago Alcantara – 6/10
Thiago gave Liverpool some control in midfield but lacked creativity with his passing.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 6/10
He showed great energy to get forward in the first half, but his performance levels faded in the second 45 minutes.
CM: Curtis Jones – 5/10
Jones was all flash and no substance in the opposition half and was guilty of squandering a good chance to score in the second half.
RW: Mohamed Salah – 6/10
The Egyptian winger finally ended Liverpool’s Premier League goal-drought at Anfield by earning and converting a penalty. He hardly got a sniff at goal otherwise.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 5/10
Firmino tried to make things happen but couldn’t find too many holes in the Man City defence.
LW: Sadio Mane – 5/10
He wasted two great chances to score in what turned out to be a toothless display from him. He needs more time to get back to his best after a rushed return from injury.
Substitutes:
CAM: Xherdan Shaqiri – 5/10
His introduction off the bench weakened Liverpool’s midfield considerably in the second half.
CM: James Milner – 5/10
He showed some fight in a losing effort.
LB: Konstantinos Tsimikas – N/A
Tsimikas hardly got any time to make an impact.
