According to Cope, as cited by Yorkshire Post, Rafa Mujica could be on the verge of a Las Palmas switch. The Leeds United attacker is set to put an end to his miserable loan spell at Real Oviedo, and will instead, join the Segunda Division outfit on yet another temporary deal. He could be one of the few players expected to leave Elland Road during the remaining days of the transfer window.
Rafa Mujica’s Spell At Real Oviedo
A former member of the famed La Masia youth academy in Barcelona, Rafa Mujica has been a part of the Leeds United setup since 2019. The striker had initially joined the club’s Elite Development Squad but had to spent several loan spells away from Elland Road since.
In the summer, Mujica joined Real Oviedo in a similar loan move, in an attempt to find more game-time at the professional stage. Unfortunately, the youngster has had a difficult time in Asturias. The club, managed by former Athletic Bilbao head coach Cuco Ziganda, has barely offered him any playing time despite the lack of depth in the attacking unit.
As such, Mujica has fallen behind the likes of Samuel Obeng, Gustavo Blanco Leshuk and even the largely unused Rodri Rios in the pecking order. It has restricted his overall game-time to just four appearances in the Segunda Division.
He featured in one Copa Del Rey match as well, starring in a 3-2 win against CD Coria by scoring two goals. But, he was left out of the squad for the next round, which Real Oviedo ended up losing to Malaga.
Does Mujica Have Any Future At Leeds United?
Rafa Mujica’s loan spell will be cut short by Leeds United in this January transfer window and for good reasons. It will see the youngster return to Elland Road, though he doesn’t have much scope in Yorkshire.
Although Marcelo Bielsa does not have any first-team alternatives for star striker Patrick Bamford, he does boast the services of a couple of exciting talents in Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood.
Greenwood, in particular, has impressed a lot with his performances in the Elite Development Squad and it won’t be surprising to see him getting a promotion to the senior side in the near future.
As for Mujica, a loan move to hometown club Las Palmas could be a positive for him. The Canaries are doing much better than Oviedo in the Segunda Division this campaign and are dark horses for a potential place in the promotion playoff.
They could certainly welcome the arrival of a talented youngster like Mujica, who could provide some much-needed competition for the likes of Sergio Araujo and Pietro Iemmelo during the second half of the campaign.
