According to The Athletic, as cited by Yorkshire Post, Leeds United are interested in the services of Brennan Johnson. The Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder has impressed the onlookers during his ongoing loan spell at Lincoln City and a move to the Premier League could be on the horizon. Leeds United are, in fact, joined by fellow league rivals Burnley in the pursuit of Johnson this month.
Who Is Brennan Johnson?
A product of the Nottingham Forest youth academy, Brennan Johnson joined Lincoln City in the summer in a season-long loan deal. He joined the League One outfit in order to gain more first-team minutes, and the youngster hasn’t disappointed either.
In just 19 league matches so far, the 19-year-old has been involved in 11 goals. He has also been involved in two goals in EFL trophy and one goal in the FA Cup against Forest Green. Although Lincoln City were knocked out by Plymouth in the second round, Johnson’s contributions in the final third have helped the club emerge as the league leaders in the third division.
A left-winger by trade, Johnson is also Lincoln City’s joint-most productive player along with Jorge Grant. Aside from his productivity, the attacker has impressed the onlookers with his close control and ability to take on opposing defenders.
In addition, Johnson is quite versatile as well. He can operate anywhere across the frontline, with the youngster particularly having an eye for the goal. It makes him quite an appealing prospect and it has been reflected in his performances for Lincoln City this season.
Do Leeds United Need Johnson?
Leeds United are not in immediate need of reinforcements in the wide-attacking department. They already have a bunch of quality players including Raphinha, Jack Harrison, Rodrigo Moreno and Ian Poveda. However, Johnson is certainly worth keeping an eye on, especially with the likes of Tyler Roberts and Helder Costa facing an uncertain future at Elland Road.
Both the players have struggled to get regular game-time under Marcelo Bielsa. It won’t be surprising to see them leave the club as a result, and that is where Johnson could come into the fray.
However, the 19-year-old still lacks the experience at the highest level of football at the moment, despite his breakthrough in League One this season. Perhaps the best option for Leeds United right now is to continue to follow the progress of the young winger at Lincoln City. He could indeed be an exciting option in the summer if he can maintain his form during the remainder of the campaign and help his club gain promotion back to the Championship.
