Raphinha, Meslier And Harrison Impress | Leeds United Players Rated In Win Over Newcastle United

Leeds United register their first win of this calendar year by beating Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James’ Park. The Whites were the better side in the first half, deservedly sealing a 1-0 lead. But, an inspiring second-half display from the Magpies saw them find the equaliser in the 57th minute. Leeds restored their lead through Jack Harrison quickly after that goal and somehow held on for a victory.

Leeds United Player Ratings Vs Newcastle United

Illan Meslier 8/10

Illan Meslier didn’t have much to do for the most part of the game. He couldn’t have done much to deny Miguel Almiron either but made two fine saves late in the game to preserve his side’s lead. A positive return to action for the Frenchman, who remained brave despite picking up a couple of nasty blows.

Luke Ayling 6/10

Back in his natural role, Luke Ayling didn’t make those signature runs forward, perhaps due to Newcastle United’s tight press. Had his struggles in the second half.

Liam Cooper 6.5/10

Liam Cooper looked extremely solid throughout the first-half, clearing out multiple balls. However, he was rattled after the interval as NUFC pushed forward for the equaliser.

Diego Llorente N/A

Diego Llorente’s night was cut short after picking yet another unfortunate injury early on in the game. Had to be replaced.

Ezgjan Alioski 7/10

Ezgjan Alioski pressured the opposition to cause the turnover that led to Leeds United’s opening. Looked fairly solid in defence, but was subbed off just before the hour mark.

Stuart Dallas 7/10

Stuart Dallas had a good game in central midfield. He provided support in the middle of the park and notably scored an unintentional goal using his hands early on in the second half.

Kalvin Phillips 7/10

Kalvin Phillips performed well for the majority of the game, especially in the first half where he dictated the play with his passing. Struggled in dealing with Saint-Maximin in the second half.

Raphinha 8.5/10

Raphinha was the creator-in-chief for Leeds United. He may not have been involved much in the game, but looked promising whenever he had the chance to run with the ball. It was he who scored the opener before threading a pass that led to Harrison’s winner.

Rodrigo Moreno 7/10

Rodrigo Moreno looked influential at certain instances, doing well to provide the craft in the central attacking role. Completely anonymous after the restart though.

Jack Harrison 8/10

Jack Harrison had a good game on the left flank as well. He scored the all-important winner late in the game and was always willing to take on the opposing defenders.

Patrick Bamford 5/10

It was yet another disappointing performance from Patrick Bamford, who simply couldn’t quite get going. On the contrary, the forward caused the NUFC turnover that led to their equaliser.

SUBSTITUTES

Pascal Struijk 6/10

Pascal Struijk replaced the injured Llorente early on in the game and looked solid alongside Cooper. However, the Dutchman evidently struggled in dealing with the likes of Callum Wilson and Saint-Maximin late in the game.

Mateusz Klich 6/10

Mateusz Klich replaced Alioski around the hour mark to add more freshness in midfield. He solidified Leeds’ second line of press, though things didn’t improve.

Tyler Roberts 6/10

Came on for the ineffective Bamford around the hour-mark, but failed to provide anything in particular.
