Despite Thomas Robert revealing his ‘dream’ (as told to Scottish Daily Mail, via the Daily Record) of making a high-profile move in the forthcoming future, Airdrieonians FC boss Ian Murray has played down the winter transfer talks for this Rangers target according to the Daily Record.
Thomas, son of former France international Laurent Robert, left the academy ranks of Montpellier last summer and plied his trade in the Scottish third tier to make a career on his own terms. However, the decision seems to have paid off and the 20-year-old attacker is enjoying an impressive run of form for the League One outfit with 3 goals and 2 assists in 9 league outings (stats via Transfermarket). His emergence has drawn the attention of many including Rangers and the player, too, has recently opened up on the speculations.
“I’ve heard about this but I don’t like to focus on it. I just try to do my best for the team, score goals and enjoy being on the pitch.
“The most important thing is, first of all, to prove myself with Airdrie and after, of course, it’s a dream for me to play with a big team like Celtic, Rangers or in the English Premier League.”
Why Rangers Should Stay Patient Ahead Of Any Potential Move
While the Scottish giants are keeping close tabs on the French starlet for obvious reasons, a January move would still be a ‘gamble’ as stated by Murray in a recent interview (as quoted by the Daily Record).
“He still needs to play more games and he’s playing at Airdrie, so I don’t see any reason why Thomas would want to leave at this stage, and I’m not sure that teams will take such a gamble on 13 games.”
The Diamonds chief is confident of keeping hold of Rangers target Thomas Robert, and Steven Gerrard should stay patient and allow him to develop his game with regular minutes week in, week out. Airdrieonians are engaged in a promotion race and the youngster should help them attain the season goals before deciding his future.
Having said that, there would be interest in him during the summer window and the Gers should stay in the hunt to bolster themselves in the attacking third. Robert has featured on both the flanks and his versatility across the frontline would inject flexibility in the long run.
Rangers have an array of wide attacking options in their ranks but are highly reliant on the likes of Ryan Kent, Kemar Roofe and Ianis Hagi. Brandon Barker, Jordan Jones or Greg Stewart have not shown enough to meet the standards and the club, thus, must explore this opportunity a few months later. However, it has to be ‘no’ from Gerrard right now.
