According to The Sun, Patrick Bamford is set for a new contract extension. The striker has impressed the onlookers with his performances in the Premier League this season, with Leeds United now willing to offer him a new deal. Bamford’s current contract at Elland Road expires at the end of next season, and the Whites are determined to prevent him from leaving the club in favour of direct league rivals.
Patrick Bamford: A Rising Star In The Premier League
Bamford is not a novel name for any English football fan, having formerly been a part of the renowned Chelsea youth academy. Despite his immense success in the Championship with Leeds United, the striker was often maligned for his lack of productivity. So naturally, following Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League, there were question marks regarding his quality and whether or not he can impress in the top-flight.
Fast forward to the halfway point of the campaign, Bamford has been one of the success stories of the Premier League this season. His remarkable ten goals in 17 matches have fired Leeds United into a comfortable mid-table position. He has scored one-third of the goal for the Whites, whose tally of 30 league goals is bettered only by four teams including defending champions, Liverpool.
One of the key noticeable features in Bamford’s game this season is his confidence. The 27-year-old has exhibited a composed nature in front of the goal, leading to an improved conversion rate. The lack of expectations and pressure has also seemed to improve the forward’s overall game – making him one of the more important players in Leeds’ first-team.
Why Leeds United Must Keep Hold Of Bamford
One could argue that Leeds United could be much more successful with a better striker upfront, considering the number of chances they create in each game. It is, however, fair to point out that very few players in the current first-team is as acclimatised to Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play than Bamford, which is perhaps the reason why the Argentine was willing to continue with the ex-Chelsea starlet.
In addition, Bamford himself hasn’t particularly been disappointing in regards to his performances, and at the age of 27, he is in the peak of his powers. In recent weeks, Bielsa has also tried to accommodate Rodrigo Moreno into the starting lineup alongside Bamford, providing Leeds United with additional firepower going forward.
Either way, the potential contract extension for Bamford could bode well for the club, although it might also be a good idea to sign a backup considering the fact that Bielsa doesn’t have too much depth in the number nine role.
