In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo has claimed that West Ham United are showing interest in Barcelona full-back Junior Firpo. However, it is understood that “nothing concrete” has taken place yet between the Hammers and the Catalans with regards to a move involving the Spanish defensive ace (via Mundo Deportivo).
Firpo’s Lacklustre Season At The Nou Camp
Firpo has endured a frustrating season at the Nou Camp thus far after failing to make himself a regular starter in Ronald Koeman’s first XI. He has made eight appearances for Barca this term, securing one assist and one yellow card in the process across all fronts.
The 24-year-old has missed a couple of games this season due to a muscle injury but has spent most of his time on the bench. He has struggled to be consistent as evidenced by his average of 0.4 tackles, 0.4 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 0.6 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League group stages. Firpo has also been quite tidy with his ball-distribution as he has completed 91.9% of his attempted passes in both those competitions.
The Spanish sensation needs to secure more first-team football if he wants to develop into a world-class player in his position in the coming seasons. Hence, he might be tempted to move to the London Stadium if the Hammers decide to launch a bid for him this month or at the end of this campaign.
What Will The Spanish Full-Back Add To David Moyes’ Team?
Firpo has the pace to make some driving runs with the ball in the opposition half. He is a bright and energetic left-back who can deliver some promising crosses into the opposition penalty area. The four-time Spanish Under-21 international has also proven himself to be a reliable defender inside his half. However, the lack of game time has disrupted his development at the Nou Camp over the past 18 months.
Recruiting someone of Firpo’s quality and potential could be a shrewd move for the Hammers as they can benefit from adding more competition for Arthur Masuaku, who has flattered to deceive with his performances this season. David Moyes has often used Aaron Cresswell as a makeshift centre-back, so there is enough room in his squad for a player of Firpo’s skillset.
Furthermore, the Spaniard could also help the East London outfit secure a top-half finish in the Premier League standings, so Moyes should consider engineering a move to bring him to the English capital before the January transfer window slams shut at the start of next month.
