Manchester City continue their push for the title challenge as they secure a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Newcastle United. The Magpies were completely dominated by the Premier League giants, who dominated possession and barely allowed any space for the attackers to cause any danger. In fact, the Sky Blues should have scored at least two or more goals, though strikes from Ferran Torres and Ilkay Gundogan were enough to secure all three points.
Manchester City Player Ratings Vs Newcastle United
Ederson 7/10
Had to make a few routine saves this evening. Nothing extraordinary as Newcastle United barely managed to provide any threat in the final third.
Joao Cancelo 9.5/10
Joao Cancelo was one of the best players in this game, providing some excellent service down the right flank. His positioning, versatility and combination play with his teammates made life difficult for Newcastle.
John Stones 7.5/10
John Stones had a good time this evening as he made some excellent defence early in the game. The Englishman looked confident in dealing with Joelinton.
Ruben Dias 7.5/10
Ruben Dias offered the necessary protection at the heart of Man City’s backline. He was rattled once or twice but nothing clinical to really trouble the centre-back.
Nathan Ake 7.5/10
Nathan Ake was a solid defensive outlet for Manchester City on the left-hand side. His ability to effortlessly slot into any defensive position made it easier for his team to adopt a more flexible shape.
Rodri 7.5/10
Controlled things in the middle of the park, imposing his presence and providing some useful forward passes. He was taken off early in the second half, with Fernandinho coming in.
Ilkay Gundogan 9.5/10
Ilkay Gundogan ran the show in the middle of the park for the Sky Blues. He barely put a foot wrong in his positioning while also offering a host of incisive runs going forward.
Raheem Sterling 8.5/10
Raheem Sterling was a menace for the Newcastle United defence throughout the course of the game. His trickery initially led to the first goal and the Englishman followed it up with a host of runs in behind the backline, causing trouble for the opposition.
Kevin de Bruyne 8.5/10
Kevin de Bruyne had yet another impressive game in the final third this evening. The Belgian was the creator-in-chief as usual, threading multiple through balls to breach the opposing backline. Rather unlucky to not score a goal.
Bernardo Silva 7.5/10
Bernardo Silva wasn’t as impressive as the others but still offered his teammates with a reliable passing option in the final third.
Ferran Torres 8.5/10
Ferras Torres put in a great shift in the number nine role. The young Spaniard was smart with his movements, which was evident throughout the course of the game. Should have scored at least another goal.
SUBSTITUTES
Fernandinho 7/10
Added more composure in the middle of the park after replacing Rodri early in the second half.
Sergio Aguero 7.5/10
Should have scored a goal after coming on for Torres late in the game, with the Argentine offering a different dimension to Man City’s attacking game.
