In a recent edition of the Que Golazo Podcast (transcripted by HITC), Fabrizio Romano has tipped Chelsea to retain their interest in West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice during the January transfer window. Romano said,
“There’s still no agreement between the two clubs, West Ham and Chelsea
“Last summer, in September, when Chelsea contacted West Ham, they asked for 80 million Euros, to sell Declan Rice, that’s why Chelsea said no at this moment we can’t pay this money, let’s see in January.
“At the moment, West Ham aren’t going to change their idea about the price of Declan Rice, so it won’t be so easy, but the new mentality of Chelsea with the transfers is that we just want our top targets, we’re not going for plan B or C, we have this new mentality it’s top targets or nothing.
“So, I’m convinced they will try again for Declan Rice in January.”
Rice’s Superb Form At The London Stadium This Season
Rice has impressed a lot with his performances at the centre of David Moyes’ midfield this season after producing a run of consistent displays in the Premier League so far. The English midfield ace has participated in 15 matches for the Hammers this term, securing one assist and one yellow card in multiple competitions.
The 21-year-old deserves credit for getting himself involved at both ends of the field as he is averaging 1.7 tackles, 2.1 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 0.6 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per game in the English first division. He has also been accurate with his ball-distribution from midfield based on his pass success rate of 88.5% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
What Does The England International Offer On The Pitch?
Rice has firmly established himself as one of West Ham’s top performers this season. He is proficient at reading the danger quickly and can make some important interceptions for his side. The ten-time England international has got a great work ethic and can distribute the ball efficiently out from the back. Furthermore, he is also not shy of making a few driving runs with the ball from midfield.
Why The Hammers Cannot Allow Rice To Leave Next Month
The East London outfit cannot afford to lose one of their best players as Rice has helped them steer clear of the relegation zone this season. He is an invaluable member of their first-team, so his departure will be a big blow as Moyes will find it difficult to replace him, especially during the winter transfer period.
West Ham will be better off keeping hold of Rice for the long-run as he could potentially lead them to a few trophies as long as Moyes can build a successful squad around him in the coming years. Plus, Mark Noble is currently entering the twilight years of his playing career which has increased Moyes’ need to keep him at the London Stadium.
