In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Leicester City defender Jonny Evans was full of praise for his teammate Wesley Fofana following his incredible start to his career at the King Power Stadium. Evans said,
“He can probably go on and become one of the best centre-backs in the world.
“Sometimes you forget how young he is. He’s got a real athleticism and maturity about him.”
The Northern Irish centre-back went on to add, “You can tell he’s going to be a top-class player.
“He’s got all the attributes: comfortable on the ball, aggressive in his defending.
“He’s confident and seems sure of himself and I think when you see the games that he has come in, he’s played with a real maturity.
“I don’t think he’s going to be one to hide from certain situations, he’ll take every challenge on. It looks like he really enjoys that challenge and you can see that by his aggression on the pitch.”
Fofana’s Incredible Form In The Premier League This Season
Fofana has made a bright start to life as a Leicester City player since making a move from Saint-Etienne earlier this year. He has taken part in 12 matches for the Foxes this term, securing four yellow cards in the process on all fronts.
The French youngster has done remarkably well to average 2.0 tackles, 2.9 interceptions, 3.9 clearances and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League this season. He has also been excellent when distributing possession out from the back as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.1% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
What Are The Foxes Starlet’s Best Attributes?
Fofana has shown excellent defensive awareness to sense the danger quickly and nip them in the bud by making a tackle or clearing his lines when required. He can time his challenges well and usually comes away with the ball when going in for tackles inside his half.
Standing at 1.90m, the 19-year-old is a strong and athletic centre-half who has already established himself as one of the most promising youngsters in Premier League football. He has enjoyed playing in Brendan Rodgers’ style of football as he is a good ball-playing defender and hardly gives away the ball when passing it out from defence.
Does Fofana Have A Bright Future At The King Power Stadium?
At 19, Fofana is still quite raw, so Rodgers has to manage his expectations if he wants to see him develop into a world-class centre-back in the future. The early signs have been quite promising from the French defensive ace but he needs to make sure that he can maintain his high standards throughout the remainder of this campaign. All in all, there is no doubt that Fofana is set to have a very bright future at the East Midlands club.
