Premiership giants Rangers have started the season in blistering fashion, as Steven Gerrard’s men currently find themselves leading the way in terms of the league table. Not only have they managed to swat aside most of the weaker teams in the division, but they also secured a dominant 2-0 win against Old Firm rivals Celtic a few weeks ago. Having not faced defeat in a single match this campaign, and with just three goals conceded in the Premiership, its safe to say that the Ibrox club are doing something right in the training ground.
What Is Rangers’ Current Squad Situation?
Although assessing the squad ahead of the campaign might’ve revealed some potential gaps, the signings that they made were all astute. The arrival of Leon Balogun filled a much-needed hole at centre-half, while Calvin Bassey has acted as an able alternative to Borna Barisic at times. While Allan McGregor has retained his place as the first-team keeper, it takes nothing away from the performances that have been out in by Jon McLaughlin. This trend of quality has continued across all the different areas of the pitch, attack included.
Bongani Zungu only recently came into the team after joining, and the initial signs were quite positive. Kemar Roofe has taken to his role in attack like a duck to water, with Cédric Itten the only summer signing who’s yet to really show what he’s all about. Moreover, players like Ryan Kent and James Tavernier have displayed new levels of form, with Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack impressing as well. Despite all of this, there are a few players in Gerrard’s roster that do need to be shipped out at the earliest, as they are surplus to requirements at the club. Three Players That Rangers Should Cash In On At The Earliest
George Edmundson
The centre-half was one of two Rangers players who were caught breaking the strict guidelines that were implemented by the club in the light of the Coronavirus pandemic. While the fact that he’s only 23 might’ve played a part in that, it takes nothing away from the severity of the action. Although the centre-half impressed with his displays during the Gers’ pre-season friendlies in France, he is yet to play a minute of league football this term. Having been handed a seven game ban, it would be disgraceful to see the defender don the famous light blue first-team jersey again. With Balogun added to a list already containing Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson and Filip Helander, this is a move that won’t hurt them too much.
Jordan Jones
The second Rangers player who was caught at an external gathering, where they were reported to have interacted with individuals outside of their household. Unlike Edmundson, Jones is 26-years-old, which means that he should have shown the responsibility required to keep away from such a situation. As was with the defender, Jones was also handed a seven-match ban. Although the likes of Brandon Barker and Ryan Kent have been preferred to Jones, it takes little away from the attacking quality that he produces. However, considering his recent actions, it would be in Gerrard’s best interest to sell.
Greg Stewart
The Scottish attacker has been a Rangers player for over a year now, and he’s yet to show any signs of breaking into the first-team. Apart from a couple of instances where Steven Gerrard chose to rotate his team heavily, Stewart’s opportunities in the eleven have been beyond limited. Originally a centre-forward by position, he is also capable of playing on the flank if required. Despite this, the fact that he’s already 30 will come as a stumbling block. With his pace obviously depleting, Stewart’s days as a winger are surely limited, and considering the number of options that Gerrard has in the strike role, cashing in on him would likely be the best choice.
