During an interview with Football Insider, Danny Mills has opened up on Christian Eriksen rejoining Spurs. The former right-back believes that the Lilywhites should at least entertain the idea of re-signing the Inter Milan playmaker, who could potentially be a bargain for the club.
“I’m pretty sure if Daniel Levy is getting a bargain, having made some money on him already, they’ll certainly look at it. He’s a player of quality, that knows the club inside out, so there’s every chance. It would certainly be foolish to rule it out immediately.”, Mills told Football Insider.
Christian Eriksen’s Struggles At Inter Milan
Eriksen joined Inter Milan at the start of last year, in a €27 million move from Tottenham. He was brought in to provide a creative essence and power to the offensive department that is led by Romelu Lukaku.
Unfortunately, things have since gone south for the Danish international, who has struggled with a lack of form and game-time in Serie A. Although he did feature in 17 league matches last season, only eight of them were starts. The playmaker was also involved in a total of just three goals, two of which came in the 6-0 riot over Brescia.
It has been quite the same story for Eriksen in the ongoing campaign, with the former Ajax prodigy mustering just 200 minutes of league football. It appears he has fallen behind Nicolo Barella in the pecking order. At the same time, Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 formation doesn’t favour a traditional playmaker like him either, thus leading to his loss of importance at Inter.
Is Eriksen A Viable Target For Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur have already built a formidable team under Jose Mourinho this season, especially following the arrival of stars like Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale. And with Dele Alli facing an uncertain future at the club, the return of Eriksen could make sense.
The Dane can provide Mourinho with an excellent option in the attacking midfield role. The Portuguese tactician’s traditional 4-3-3 formation should also aid the player, who normally likes to operate in the number ten slot.
Unfortunately, a move for Eriksen is financially unfeasible for the north London giants, who already have a bunch of top quality players in their ranks at the moment. Bale, in particular, is already pocketing a sizeable wage while Spurs may also need to offload Alli and either of Giovani Lo Celso or Tanguy Ndombele to be able to sign their former playmaker.
While Lo Celso has found it difficult to find his rhythm so far this campaign, it won’t be wise to offload the player who cost quite a fortune for the club last season. Ndombele, on the other hand, is finally starting to showcase his quality, so Eriksen, at the moment, is not the most viable target for the Lilywhites.
