Bayern Munich locked horns with Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park earlier tonight as they looked to secure all three points on the road. Both sides fought tooth and nail in the first half but struggled to break each other down. However, Marco Reus gave the home team the lead with his goal in the 45th minute which was cancelled out in the first half injury-time when David Alaba popped up with the equaliser via a deflected free-kick.
Robert Lewandowski found the back of the net just three minutes into the second half. After a while, Leroy Sane came off the bench to score in the 80th minute which put daylight between the two teams. Despite Erling Haaland’s consolation goal three minutes later, Dortmund ended up losing the match by a narrow 3-2 scoreline to the Bavarian giants.
Let’s take a look at how each Bayern Munich player fared during the clash against Dortmund.
GK: Manuel Neuer – 6.5/10
The German goalie made a couple of important clearances but will be disappointed for conceding two goals tonight. However, he did make a great save to deny Giovanni Reyna in the second 45 minutes.
RB: Bouna Sarr – 5.5/10
Sarr looked far from convincing when defending at the back but did enough to get his team over the line with maximum points in the bag.
CB: Jerome Boateng – 7/10
The experienced centre-half was not afraid to put his body on the line to block the opposition’s shot attempts and even pulled off a couple of vital interceptions at the back. He got replaced after the hour mark.
CB: David Alaba – 7/10
The Austrian international struggled to cope with Haaland’s threat in the first half but came back and produced a much-improved display in the second. He even got his name on the scoresheet with his deflected free-kick just before the half-time break.
LB: Lucas Hernandez – 8/10
Hernandez put in a solid performance in defence by earning the ball back and making a few crucial clearances inside his half. He deserves a lot of credit for restricting Jadon Sancho from scoring during the 90 minutes and even picked up an assist for setting up Lewandowski’s goal.
CM: Leon Goretzka – 6.5/10
He was not afraid to have a few shots at goal and was unfortunate not to score tonight. He also won a couple of aerial duels and worked hard at the centre of the park.
CM: Joshua Kimmich – 6/10
Kimmich was tidy when distributing the ball from midfield but got injured in the 35th minute and was forced off the field.
LW: Serge Gnabry – 6.5/10
The former Arsenal winger was sometimes sloppy with the ball but still managed to cause a lot of headaches for the Dortmund defenders with his powerful running down the left flank.
CAM: Thomas Muller – 7/10
The German veteran created a plethora of goal-scoring chances for his teammates but never looked like he had a goal in him.
RW: Kingsley Coman – 6.5/10
Coman gave away the ball cheaply at times but was a constant threat in front of the opposition goal. He was not shy of having a shot but ended the game without a goal to his name.
ST: Robert Lewandowski – 8/10
The Polish marksman missed a great early opportunity to score but made amends for it just three minutes into the second half when he got his name on the scoresheet. He even picked up an assist for setting up Sane’s goal in the 80th minute.
Substitutes:
CB: Corentin Tolisso – 6/10
Tolisso struggled to get himself involved in the game after coming off the bench and had a forgetful second half.
RW: Leroy Sane – 7.5/10
His electric pace caused all sorts of problems for the opposition. Sane even got in on the goal-scoring act with an excellent strike in the latter stages of the contest.
CB: Javi Martinez – 6.5/10
He came on and did enough work defensively to see out the win for his side.
