Premier League giants Chelsea took another step towards qualifying for the next round of the Champions League after a rather comfortable 3-0 win against Ligue 1 side Rennes at Stamford Bridge. The Blues started the game in the ascendancy, with their pressure paying off in the early stages as Timo Werner won a penalty. Not only did he score that one, but he was presented with yet another spot-kick just a few minutes later, which he put away with great aplomb as well. Tammy Abraham then got in on the act with a simple finish after Reece James found him with a delectable cross. The London club eased past the ten men of Rennes, and Lampard will take massive motivation from the fact that they’re yet to concede a goal in the competition this season.

Edouard Mendy – 7
The former Rennes man had an extremely comfortable outing against his former club, as the Chelsea defenders stood strong in front of him. Only had one real shot on target to deal with over the course of the ninety.
Reece James – 8
The Englishman put in an excellent shift down this right side as he got up and down all through the night. Worked hard at the back and played in a peach of a cross to find Abraham for the Blues’ third goal.
Kurt Zouma – 8
The big Frenchman was solid in the heart of the defence for Chelsea as he kept the Rennes attackers at arm’s length for the entirety of the tie. Passed it around well and never really looked flustered in possession.
Thiago Silva – 8
Like his centre-half partner, the Brazilian veteran didn’t put a foot wrong all evening. Offered an excrement composed presence at the back and was never given any trouble by the usually dangerous Rennes attack-line.
Ben Chilwell – 7.5
The Englishman was given an early rest tonight as Lampard withdrew him around the hour mark. Got forward when required to and put in quite the defensive shift in the second half to keep Rennes in check.
N’Golo Kante – 9
The Frenchman was nothing short of sublime in the heart of midfield for Chelsea as he didn’t allow the Rennes players a single moment of respite. Won the ball back numerous times and passed it around well too.
Jorginho – 7
The Italian put in a typically composed display in the Chelsea engine room, as he passed the ball around well and ensured that they kept possession. Worked hard in defence when called into action as well.
Hakim Ziyech – 7
The Moroccan wasn’t as fluent on the ball as he was on the weekend, but he passed it around with typical confidence. Linked up with James on multiple occasions and looked sharp for the most part.
Mason Mount – 7.5
The youngster was the Blues’ pressing catalyst in the midfield, as he didn’t give the Rennes players time to dwell on the ball. Tried to find attacking avenues as well, but wasn’t able to produce too much.
Timo Werner – 7.5
The German speedster scored two goals on the night, with both of them coming in the form of penalties. Made some good attacking runs but needs to offer more of a cutting edge in the opposition’s box.
Tammy Abraham – 7.5
The English striker got his first Champions League goal of the new season tonight after a neat finish off a pinpoint Reece James cross. Worked hard in attack and tried to hold the ball up and bring others into play.

The Frenchman had a couple of excellent opportunities to score tonight but wasted both of them. The lack of match sharpness was apparent.
Emerson Palmieri – 6
The Italian international replaced Chilwell in the second half and didn’t do too much wrong. Defended when he was required to and tried to make attacking forays at times as well.
Mateo Kovacic – 6.5
The Croatian produced a couple of silky touches in the attacking third as he went on a few mazy dribbles. Drove at the Rennes back-line in the late stages as Chelsea looked for a fourth.
Antonio Rudiger – 6
The big German was barely required to do any defending after coming on, as the away’s side’s numerical disadvantage put them in a comfortable situation. Calm in possession of the ball though.
