Manchester United faced off against Istanbul Basaksehir at the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium earlier tonight hoping to maintain their 100% winning record in the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils made a sloppy start to the game and conceded in the 12th minute when Demba Ba found the back of the net. Edin Višća doubled his team’s advantage in the 40th minute, but Anthony Martial got a goal back for the visitors just before the half-time break.
The home side defended valiantly in the second half as Man United struggled to break them down as the match ended with the Red Devils suffering a disappointing 2-1 loss away in Turkey.
Let’s take a look at how each Man United player fared during the contest against Istanbul Basaksehir.
GK: Dean Henderson – 5/10
The Man United goalie couldn’t do much to save either of the two goals in what was a frustrating night for him.
RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 4/10
The ex-Crystal Palace full-back was at fault for not tracking the danger in the lead-up to Demba Ba’s early goal. He also failed to create too many chances in the attacking third.
CB: Axel Tuanzebe – 5/10
Tuanzebe struggled to deal with Demba Ba’s threat during his time on the field. He picked up a caution in the first 45 minutes and got subbed at half-time.
CB: Harry Maguire – 3/10
The English centre-back had a nightmare game at the back and didn’t fill his teammates with any confidence. He lacked leadership and didn’t organise his backline well enough to keep the opposition attackers at bay during the game.
LB: Luke Shaw – 5/10
The hard-working full-back was caught ball-watching in the lead-up to Edin Visca’s goal. However, he quickly made amends by setting up Martial’s goal just before half-time. Still, it was far from a convincing performance from him tonight.
CM: Nemanja Matic – 3.5/10
The Serbian midfield ace was at fault for losing track of Demba Ba in the 12th minute which led to the opener. He lost his composure at times and put in a disjointed display throughout the 90 minutes.
CM: Donny van de Beek – 5/10
The Dutch playmaker made a bright start to the game, but his impact faded in the second half which led to his substitution near the hour mark.
LW: Marcus Rashford – 4/10
The English speedster tried to make things happen on his own but offered very little in the decisive end of the field.
CAM: Bruno Fernandes – 4/10
The Portuguese playmaker put in a lacklustre performance and never looked like he had a goal in him.
RW: Juan Mata – 4/10
The former Chelsea attacker didn’t have too many bright moments in the first 45 minutes and got replaced just 16 minutes into the second half.
ST: Anthony Martial – 5/10
The French striker popped up with a goal just before half-time to give his teammates some hope of a comeback. However, he was nowhere near good enough in the latter stages of the contest.
Substitutes:
CM: Scott McTominay – 5/10
He provided some fresh energy in midfield.
CM: Paul Pogba – 4/10
He had minimal impact in the game.
ST: Edinson Cavani – 4/10
The Uruguayan striker looked way off the pace.
RW: Mason Greenwood – 5/10
Greenwood added some pace but to no great effect.
RB: Timothy Fosu-Mensah – 5/10
He looked very average in the final quarter of the game.
