German club Wolfsburg have said that they would allow Julian Draxler to leave the Volkswagen Arena if the player asks for a move. Draxler fell out with the club this summer when he alleged that Wolfsburg stopped him from joining another club in the previous transfer window despite promising him that they would allow him to leave if the price was right.
He was fined for his comments and finally after much drama the matter was settled. However, it seems that it has gone horribly wrong for the Die Wölfe this season as the runners-up of 2015 have been only able to conjure up 9 points from their 11 games and lie 14th in the Bundesliga table. It has affected Draxler as well with the versatile midfielder becoming more frustrated and the German is likely to leave.
The problem lies with the fact that the attacker has a contract with Wolfsburg which is valid till 2020 and there is also a release clause in the contract set at €75m. This season, the 23-year old has failed to impress which can affect his transfer as clubs won’t be very keen to shell out the big bucks for the player considering his current form. In the summer, there were interests from both PSG and Arsenal.
PSG already recruited Hatem Ben Arfa in the summer and have players like Angel di Maria to work the channels and Arsenal also has some options at the moment in their wide areas after the emergence of Alex Iwobi, with the previous presence of Theo Walcott, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain and Alexis Sanchez who can all play on the wings.
Draxler is a kind of player who relies on his dynamic dribbling to create spaces and is also a very good crosser of the ball. Wenger has been a long-time admirer of the 23-year old and the chance to sign him up will create a kind of dilemma for the veteran manager.
The Frenchman has always remained a purist in his approach and has been always very honest to his players. Signing Draxler will no doubt increase the quality of the Gunners side but it would be bad news for Alex Iwobi.
Judging by the style of play and attributes, the former Schalke man would be a perfect fit at Arsenal and will have a chance to team up with his idol Mesut Ozil. There’s no doubt that Julian Draxler would develop into a much better player than he is at Arsenal under Wenger as his attacking potential would be fully unleashed playing in the setup employed by the North London club.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Wenger himself is prepared to show his intent by paying the amount needed to bring the 23-year old to the club in the future.
