In a recent interview with Football Insider, ex-England international Danny Mills shared that Liverpool might look to recruit Bayern Munich defender David Alaba during the January transfer window as he said, “I think Liverpool will be looking.
“It would be very difficult to win the title and challenge for the Champions League with a very inexperienced back four.
“I am sure a lot of the top clubs will be looking at Alaba.
“He can sign a pre-contract in January and I would be very, very surprised if he does not have something lined up already because he is world-class. A player of that ability, that class, that pedigree will not wait for an auction come the end of the season.
“If he has not signed a new contract there is obviously a reason. I would suggest something is pencilled in. He will have a good idea of where he is going.”
Alaba’s Decent Run Of Form At Bavaria Recently
The 28-year-old has been a real revelation as a centre-back under the stewardship of Hans-Dieter Flick over the past 12 months. The Wien-born defensive ace managed to help his team win the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League last season.
However, with less than a year remaining on his current contract at the Allianz Arena, the Munich giants are now in a difficult position as they would have to consider selling him on a cut-price deal this winter or else risk losing him for free at the end of this campaign.
Alaba has made a solid start to this campaign after making nine appearances for the German champions while picking up one assist in various competitions. The experienced Austrian international has been a rock at the back for the Munich outfit recently. He has done well to average 1.0 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per game in the German top-flight so far. The former Austria Wien prospect has also retained possession immaculately inside his half after making 89% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Does The Austrian Defender Bring To The Table?
Alaba still has decent pace in his locker and can make some important recovering runs when getting stretched by the opposition on the defensive end of the pitch. He has rediscovered himself as a centre-half and has used his experience well to pull off a few crucial interceptions for his team.
The 72-time Austrian international is a dead-ball specialist as he packs a lot of power with his shots from long range. He has excellent defensive awareness and can also win his fair share of aerial duels at the back.
Is Alaba The Right Choice For The Reds?
The way Alaba is playing at the moment, he could walk into any top European team and do a good job for them in defence. The Bundesliga star will be a brilliant choice for Jurgen Klopp as he will significantly bolster the quality of the Liverpool backline and help the Reds cope with the long-term injury absence of Virgil Van Dijk.
Based on his current form, Alaba will be a significant upgrade over Joel Matip, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips at Anfield. He could potentially form a dominant defensive partnership with Joe Gomez if the Merseysiders can successfully recruit him in the future.
