In a recent interview with Football Insider, ex-England defender Danny Mills reckoned that Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn deserves an improved contract as he said, “McGinn is a top-class player and if you do not reward players in this day and age and they get within two years of their contract they start thinking, ‘Maybe I am not wanted and I will walk away and leave.’
“He is undoubtedly a fantastic player and you have to tie down your assets so at least then if they are to be sold you can get good money for them.”
McGinn’s Impressive Spell At Villa Park So Far
The Scottish midfielder has made a bright start to this Premier League campaign after banging in one goal and earning four assists in six matches for the Villans so far. The 26-year-old deserves a pat on the back for contributing in both halves as he is averaging 0.8 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 1.3 shots, 1.8 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the English first division this season (stats via whoscored).
Since making a switch from Hibernian back in 2018, McGinn has gone on to make 81 appearances for Dean Smith’s team, netting 12 goals and providing 17 assists across all competitions which is more than a decent return for a box to box midfielder.

McGinn is one of the most hard-working midfielders in English football and can do a bit of everything for his team at the centre of the park. He is not shy of producing an industrious display to help his teammates out at the back and has shown great maturity to contribute by scoring or creating the odd goal in the final third from time to time.
The 26-time Scotland international can even make some driving runs with the ball in the opposition half but needs to be more dominant with his performances in midfield. At 26, the Glasgow-born workhorse is currently playing at his prime and deserves a pay-rise for his incredible consistency as a valuable member of Dean Smith’s first-team.

Along with Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins, McGinn’s form has been excellent over the past few months. With all things considered, the Scottish midfield enforcer should be offered a lucrative new contract as the West Midlands side cannot afford to lose him to a bigger club in the coming years. His current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2024, so Smith can take his time to wait and see how McGinn performs throughout the course of this season before deciding on whether to tie him down to a fresh deal at Villa Park next summer.
